ICE targets Los Angeles homeless shelter LOS ANGELES — Immigration officials have been repeatedly spotted outside a Hollywood homeless shelter since May, leading staff to accompany residents from war-torn countries to work, errands and court. An executive at the shelter that serves people ages 18 to 24 said she saw two Venezuelan men handcuffed and arrested by ICE agents after they returned to the shelter from work.

Todd Lyons, the acting director of ICE, said his agency will prioritize its "limited resources" on arresting and deporting "the worst of the worst," such as those in the U.S. unlawfully who also have serious criminal histories. Some members of the group charged in the Prairieland Detention Center anti-ICE attack on Independence Day have been arrested in the past for protest activities. Ines Soto, who is part of the group of ten charged with attempted murder of federal officers and firearm offenses, was arrested at a protest in 2016 for allegedly resisting arrest and trying to avoid detention, according to K-HOU 11 at the time. The protest was against a speech by Richard Spencer at Texas A&M University. The outlet My Aggie Nation noted that Soto was 31 in 2016, which corroborates with a KERA News report stating that Soto is now 40 years old and was released on a $10,000 bond. Meanwhile, KERA News reported that Savanna Batten partook in the Occupy Wall Street movement through an "Occupy Dallas" protest in 2011, where she was arrested for allegedly not allowing people to come and go from a Chase Bank. The case was ultimately dismissed, as a criminal trespassing charge was scrapped in exchange for 24 community service hours, the outlet reported. Batten also specifically has a history of anti-ICE activism, as she was charged for allegedly blocking a highway in June 2018 near a Dallas ICE facility, and the charge for that was also dismissed in 2019 as part of a program. Multiple cases of ICE arresting and detaining people who are appearing for their immigration court hearings have been confirmed by community members, advocates and the press. These appear to be people who ICE has on a list and are specifically seeking to target. In the immigration hearings for people being targeted, ICE lawyers are asking the judge to “dismiss” the cases, meaning they want to drop the legal case against the person. Afterwards, ICE appears to be on standby ready to detain them. Where are people being arrested? In and around immigration courthouses where immigration hearings are held, including in elevators and lobbies while exiting the building. In NYC the immigration courts include 26 Federal Plaza, 201 Varick St and 290 Broadway. This has also been occurring in other places around the country, including the Buffalo Immigration Court in Buffalo, NY.
