Hegseth Recounts Tenacity, Valor of World War I-era Black Infantry Regiment
Maximum Overkill posted a topic in The Geek Club
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth today recounted the tenacity and valor of a World War I-era predominantly Black National Guard unit, as descendants of those soldiers accepted the Congressional Gold Medal on behalf of their ancestors' actions during an award ceremony in Washington. Taking place in the U.S. Capitol's Emancipation Hall, the ceremony honored the "Harlem Hellfighters" of the New York National Guard's 369th Infantry Regiment. Despite the racial tensions that came with serving in a segregated Army stateside, the men of the 369th became one of the first African American units to serve overseas with the American Expeditionary Force during the war. Once in Europe, the Harlem Hellfighters tallied 191 consecutive days of frontline combat ā more time than any other American unit. Hegseth began his remarks by highlighting the Hellfighters' tenacity by setting the scene at the beginning of the 369th's deployment from New York to France in the winter of 1917. He noted that the regiment's ship encountered continuous obstacles ā including breaking down and catching fire ā resulting in the vessel having to make three attempts at leaving the East Coast between November and December before it could finally make its way toward France. "And so, they sailed on through cold rain; they were soldiers, volunteers and they were incredible Americans," Hegseth said of the 369th's soldiers as they made their way across the Atlantic. HUD suspends Mayor LaToya Cantrell, Jeffrey Vappie from signing contracts
Maximum Overkill posted a topic in The Geek Club
Citing federal corruption charges, the federal government has barred New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell and her former bodyguard, Jeffrey Vappie, from signing contracts involving federal dollars, a move that will have little impact on the flow of federal money to the city. The āsuspension notice,ā announced by Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner on the social media platform X on Wednesday, comes after prosecutors on Aug. 15 accused the two of charging romantic getaways to taxpayers, then lying about their affair. The notice, sent to Cantrell and Vappie, a former Housing Authority of New Orleans board member, says both are suspended from "participation in procurement and non-procurement transactions as a participant or principal with HUD and throughout the executive branch of the federal government." "We cannot entrust taxpayer dollars to the New Orleans mayor and her 'bodyguard' who have been charged with indictment by a Grand Jury with wire fraud, among other federal crimes," Turner wrote. "Corrupt Cantrell canāt abuse American taxpayer dollars any longer." New Orleans relies heavily on federal dollars: Funding from Washington totaled more than $400 million this year, according to the city's 2025 budget ā a fifth of the city's total revenue. And the Housing Authority of New Orleans' $260 million budget relies primarily on federal dollars.
