  1. It's been a while since I needed to ask a question, Mike.

     

    But I'm in a new league this year that is going to go 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, TE, K, DEF, and Off Flex (which can be QB, WR, or RB). Now, I knew already from the sound of it that the best course of action is starting 2 QBs (we only do 3 pts per passing TD, but 2 for every 25 passing yds). But I wanted to get verification from the compiler. So I entered the one O-Flex and compiled.

     

    And I didn't see what I was looking to see. After fiddling with it for a while, I remembered you saying that we need to change the baseline for 2 QB leagues. It's got to be one of the last 3 (Last Starter, Median Player, or Last Player), right?

     

    We also do a hard position cap, where we have to draft 2 QBs, 4 WRs, 4 RBs, 2 TEs, 2 Ks, 2 DEFs, and 1 open position. I have no idea how that open position is going to shake out. We're either going to be 10 teams or 12. If we're 12, I know the best course of action is to get a 3rd QB (one I'm sure is starting), because the difference between having a 3rd QB and not having 1 for bye weeks is a pretty big deal. But if we end up with only 10 teams, then drafting a 3rd QB isn't as big a priority, as there should be a starting QB available for a bye week start.

     

    So that's QBs, and the rest of the backups would be some combination of RB, WR, and TE. (Yes, TE. Our TE scoring is such that the 25th TE is projected for more points than the 49th RB or WR).

     

    I wish I could set up an offensive flex backup, where it would take the highest backup available.

     

    I know backups aren't a huge deal, but I'm such a perfectionist, that unless I figure out what to enter it'll drive me crazy. Any thoughts? I guess I'll have to prepare two sets of numbers, and then enter them once I see how many teams we'll have.


  2. I just received this morning some great info from one of our Mac users, Jon. I'll just quote the whole email...

    Now I realize this may not help some of you who are doing your FF from a work machine (for shame! - HA! :wave: ) if you can't install new programs on your Mac, but hopefully this helps a few. MS Office 2004 and 2008 will install and run side-by-side on the same computer without bothering each other. That applies to Windows and Mac. I have both Win versions on my desktop.

     

    So download and install it when you're less than a month away from your draft date, I guess. :thumbsdown:


  3. That's exactly our scoring on WRs. Our scores are different on other positions.

     

    Just yesterday I did some figuring of what my settings should be. It worked like this: I made a list of the top 50 WRs, and how many points they actually scored last year. I subtracted the points that were due to every other scoring category (TDs, receptions, and whatever else). The remaining points were therefore solely due to the receiving yardage. For each player I divided their yardage totals by the number of yardage points. I then tried different values of the 100+ games setting in order to minimize the standard deviation of the pts/yard. The end results was 1.1 point for every 10 receving yards, with 6 points for every 100 yard game.

    Am I explaining what I did properly? I can show a spreadsheet of what I did if anyone's interested (probably would make more sense). Did the same thing for RBs, (under a different scoring system), and their 100+ rushing was also 6. I was surprised by that, so I did it for TEs (also in a different scoring system) and it was only like .5 a point per TE 100+ receiving game.

    I imagine the 6 pt per 100 yard game means that WRs who go over 100 yards receiving must average 130 yards (which would give an additional 6 points in this scoring system).


  4. Hey, so it kind of works in OpenOffice.

    I'm no expert, so I'm not sure if I understand it right. But it seems like OpenOffice includes a form of BASIC called StarOfficeBASIC.

    The systems are not entirely compatible. There's a big pdf made by openoffice about converting macros. It's not a simple process.

    I don't really understand what they're saying the differences are.

     

    OpenOffice tries to convert it automatically. Some things work. The Save League Profile button seems to work fine (although one of the things that is different is the command to turn off screen updating, so all the text quickly scrolls by).

    The other functions seem to run into problems with the RANGE function. In StarBASIC, it's getCellRangeByName (or something like that).

     

    I'm sure the last thing you would want to do (even if you had the time) would be to learn a new form of basic and then convert all the macros into that. It might solve your Macintosh problem though, as there's a version of OpenOffice called NeoOffice which is designed for the Mac and appears to have the same BASIC support built into it.


  5. I would say the problem with this analysis is that it relies on the VBD number. There are many different ways to calculate the VBD baseline, and each works well for some situations, and not so well for others.

     

    Making the last starter as the baseline overrates the highest players, especially in deep leagues.

    Making the last drafted player as the baseline overrates players at the positions with the least depth.

    I like having the baseline be the average starter.

     

    The best system would probably be one that used different baselines at different times. But no one's ever tried to figure out how to do that.

     

    The point is that VBD is an approximation for value. At the extremes, it's not as correct. Personally, I think you'll know when your cheatsheet is in the right order when the #1 drafter's points are as close as possible to the #12 drafter.

     

    In other words, I don't think your numbers say anything about one spot being better than the other. Instead, they prove that VBD isn't accurate enough.

    You know, I was trying to figure out how to remove extra spaces from things. The TRIM function. I'll have to remember that.


  7. Yeah, the complier will be fine. You can have like 5 separate league settings in there. The Draft Buddy, however, can only hold one set of draft data at a time.

    What you can do, however, is save two copies of the Draft Buddy, with each one holding one league's data.

     

    Have the first league active in the compiler, then create the draft information in the draft buddy. Choose Save As, and name it something like "Draft Buddy League A". Go back to the compiler, make the other league active, and set up Draft Buddy once again. This time save it as "Draft Buddy League B". You can then deal with each of the league's drafts separately.


  8. My apologies if this is covered somewhere, but I haven't been able to find it. I'm very, very close to buying the compiler before the price goes up after tonight, however watching the Screencast it hits me that it may not fit my league. Let's see if anyone can assure me that it will work.

     

    In the screencast, I see that you're supposed to fill in backups per position. We're not restricted by position for our "bench spots". While it would be a bad plan, technically I could have 7 RB's sitting on the bench with no other position being backed up (including IDP players). The screencast doesn't appear to have an option for flex bench spots. How will that effect the draft buddy?

     

    Or am I completely off, and without having the app to play with it I just can't see the option for flex bench spots?

    No, you're right. There isn't anything for that. IIRC from what Mike has said in previous years, the best that you can do is approximate the most likely number of backups at each position (most teams have a backup qb, backup wr, backup rb, etc.). As long as your guesses match what most of the league does, it should figure out their overall value correctly.

     

    Note that you can use decimals for your backups as well. My league is strict on all backups except one. I figure that last backup will be either a QB, RB, or a WR, so I entered it in as .33 backups at each position.

    IDK if you've gotten it figured out or not. If not, then here goes. When you are in the download area, there's a section to the right called "More Links". Highlighted in yellow is a link that says "Projection Pal Download". That's the one if you're looking for.

    The numbers show that TO is the greater big play receiver. 14.6 ypc to 13.4. Nearly as many TDs while playing nearly a season less.

    Harrison is a special player too, don't get me wrong.


  11. I posted this in A Little Help, but there's no one (literally) there. I'm at a moral crisis, and I don't know what to do. I really need someone's help.

     

    We are doing our playoff draft this week. It's an 8 team league, and 6 RBs have been taken (we only start 1 RB). I am down to Deuce McAllister or Joseph Addai. I already have Drew Brees, Muhsin Muhammad, Donte' Stallworth, and Todd Heap. It's a league that gives lots of points for TEs, so I had to get a good one. I feel like McAllister is the better pick, but I'm worried about him being on the same team as Brees. If Philly pulls off the win, I've lost both my starting RB and my starting QB.

     

    Given the circumstances, do I take Deuce, do I take Addai, or do I let the 7th owner choose his RB and take whichever one is left?

  12. My playoff league has its draft in the divisional round instead of the wild card round. 6 teams have taken their RBs. I'm down to Deuce McAllister or Joseph Addai. It's a PPR league, otherwise pretty normal scoring. If anyone sees this, what do you recommend?


  13. No. It figures your baseline based on how many players you list as starters (and backups, in some cases). You only have to use the baseline adjust if your league does something really weird or if overall rankings seem really wrong.


  14. Mike, this is only tangentially related to the topic at hand. Did you get the e-mail I sent you? When my draft finished, I sent the results to you guys via the button in the Draft Buddy. After sending it, my computer crashed before I could save it. Is there any way to retrieve that information from wherever it went when I sent it to you? It was a 20-team league, and I believe I had zhinz@sbcglobal.net as the e-mail address.


  15. I'm not sure how to do your Flex Positions, actually. The problem is that if you put in two Off Flex, and include RB, WR, and TE in that, then the compiler will think that you can start RBs at both flex, which isn't the case. The last guy who had that, I had him Combine WR and TE and do 1 Off Flex (RB / WR), but that will devalue TEs too much in your league, where you have to start one.

     

    Let me ask you this? Is it common for someone to start a 2nd TE, or is it usually a 4th WR? Given how TEs usually rank, I'm guessing it's the later. So with that said, I would do it as 2 RB, 4 WR, 1 TE, and 1 Off Flex (which can be RB or WR).

     

    Quick hits on your other questions:

    Your backup positions look reasonable.

    No, don't combine WR and TE.

    Compiler Recommended has been tweaked to be most accurate in normal (among other things, 1 QB) draft leagues. It devalues the QBs a little too much if you're in a start 2 QB league like you are. I think Mike recommends Last Starter for those leagues instead.


  16. Everyone will be low on Addai because he hasn't won the starting role. Yet. That doesn't mean it wasn't a good pick. Half of the first-round picks each year fail to live up to expectations

     

    For what it's worth, the two sites I consult are this sites projections and the KUBIAK projections from footballoutsiders.com . FFToday has him as the 11th RB. KUBIAK has him as the 18th RB. He'll probably be somewhere in that range.

     

    The only thing that I would point out is the Average Draft Position information. Addai's average draft spot is late in the 3rd round in 16-team leagues. With that in mind Addai was probably a reach. It's a good lesson for your draft next year though. While who you draft is important, sometimes where you draft them is more important. Addai probably would have been a good value with your pick in the 3rd.

     

    With that said, I wouldn't trade him though. You might as well rid it out and see how he does.

    3. Actually, the "Baseline Adjust Factor*" lists the TE at 1. I was referring the to cell four up from there - "Total Starters" for TEs. That's listed at 0. It seems from your comment that I can simply leave it and not mess with it. Gates is projected at #58 with 176.9 pts.

     

    Yeah, if Gates is #58, then it's probably right.


  18. 1. You can just make the Passing TD 6, and then have all the yardages be 0. The yardage is for if you get a bonus on TDs more than a certain length.

     

    3. Tiering is the red lines that seperate players on the individual cheatsheets. What it's saying is that all those RBs (or WRs or QBs or whatever) are basically projected for the same amount. You can use this to see where the best value is. For example, let's say you're picking 8th in a 10-team league, and there are 2 RBs left in the highest tier, and 5 WRs left in the highest tier. It's better to take a RB, because odds are that a WR in the highest tier will still be available in your next pick.

     

    4. You don't have to do that as an offensive flex. Just check the "Combine WR and TE" button. That will list TEs as WR in the projections. I'm surprised that your number list a baseline of 0 TEs. It makes me think that something was entered wrong. How many points is Antonio Gates projected for in your scoring system, and what rank would he be among WRs?
