If you look closely at the data the all time high is Q4 (holiday spending) then people recover in the following Q1. Then we had the great recession, and debt fell. It continues to fall as people were still wary until about 2014 when it picked up again. Hit all time highs during the Trump years. Then covid, everyone stopped spending money and it fell again. Then people spent like crazy the past few years as the economy boomed and people made up for lack of spending during covid. Looking at this data, you can see that the all time high was still 2008 before the crash. That was the time when everyone lived above their means before it all came crashing down. You can see it hit highs every year during Trump, only to crash again in coivd. End of 2023 was still less than 2019 and much less than 2008.
