Morrissey's distinctive vocals/phrasing combined with his droll lyrics are an acquired taste. He has always been a bit of a jerk and his hateful, bigoted views of recent years only added to many folks already negative perception of him (to the point that when I post any of his solo work on Twitter I almost feel like I have to add some of disclaimer).

I agree but they had a bunch of things working against them... I think a lot of their early work was too ahead of its time. While "Los Angeles" "White Girl" and "Blue Spark" got a lot of Alternative/Indie radio airplay and hold up well today, they were out of step with most rock fans in the 80s were looking for, to be a success. None of the their albums ever cracked the US Billboard Top 50 (Under The Big Black Sun charted the best at #76). None of their singles made the Top 25 nationally. They were a local L.A. band and my friends and I thought, when we first heard "Burning House of Love'' off of "Ain't Love Grand" in 1985 that this was going to be the hit that finally broke them on the national level. But it was not to be, as the tune, while starting out fast, inexplicably stalled at #27 on Billboard Hot 100 (and this was even after an American Bandstand appearance).

Foghat was a lot more than just a boogie band IMO, but I digress... Status Quo did have one big US hit "Pictures Of Matchstick Men" although viewed from what they did afterwards it does seem like an outlier. Fun Fact: Status Quo was the obvious inspiration for the band Spinal Tap in the film of the same name (although the producers/writers of the film deny that).

Best lead guitarist I ever saw live but has never even been nominated since he first became elgible in 1997. His omission is certainly not from a lack of talent or popularity (he sold 30 million records worldwide). Plus he made Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. He never had a "hit" record but that should not be fatal to making the cut.
