In California, any crime of violence against a police officer or any LEO results in an enhanced sentence. Shooting a police officer is no different a crime than shooting an ordinary citizen, but in this state but it is treated differently and there is additional penalty for that, even though "a crime is a crime." I have yet to hear anyone on the right who is against hate crimes complain that it is unjust to treat LEOs differently or that they shouldn't be given "special treatment."

Fun Fact: If someone is attacked for being white, that qualifies as a hate crime too.
