Saying the NYT "actually get it" by publishing this opinion piece implies that they agree with the author (hence an endorsement) which is not the case with opinion pieces in most mainstream newspapers.

Publishing an opinion piece by a newspaper is not an endorsement by the newspaper of what is stated in the opinion piece. HTH.

Actual translation: The NYT, WAPO, LA Times and other major newspapers publish opinion pieces all the time they don't necessarily agree with in order to show another point of view. It doesn't mean that they "actually get it" as the OP stated.
