This was the 5 year anniversary of his death at the hands of Chauvin, which is the reason for the renewed media coverage. He has gotten the attention over other victims with smaller rap sheets or no rap sheets at all because his brutal murder by Chauvin was captured on video and got at least 10 million views (probably ten times that). Everyone saw what is essentially a public execution of an unarmed man. That image (with Chauvin's boot on his neck for 8/12 minutes) is an image no can forget who has seen it. The video is what convicted Chauvin of murder. This is what separates it from the 100's of other murders that happen every day and maybe the dozen each year that are done by LEOs.

We literally see him murdered on video by Chauvin over a period of 9 minutes. That makes him a sympathetic victim irrespective of his past criminal record (which is irrelevant to his murder). The idea that this the person who was essentially executed in public, should not be allowed a moment of silence at a sports event is appalling to me.
