Favre questions whether he has any magic left

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - Even Brett Favre isn't sure he's got the magic to pull the Green Bay Packers back from the brink.

The Packers are 1-5 and injuries have devastated the three-time defending NFC North champs who are without their top two running backs and three of their top wide receivers.

``I feel like when I'm on the field I will always have a chance to help this team win and will be the difference,'' Favre said Wednesday. ``That's what's been disappointing this year more so than any other year, because we've lost four games by nine points and I would think that I could be the one who could make the difference.''

The streak started when the Packers came up short to Cleveland 26-24 on Sept. 18, then lost 17-16 against Tampa Bay the following week and 32-29 earlier this month on Monday night in Carolina. Favre rallied Green Bay from a 19-point deficit, but couldn't move the Packers into field goal position on their final drive.

On Sunday, they blew a 17-point halftime lead and lost 23-20 at Minnesota.

``We've had chances, like Carolina, I was disappointed as I've ever been after that game sitting in my locker,'' Favre said. ``I'm thinking to myself, 'We came back. We gave it a run.' But that's not enough in my mind. It makes me start questioning, 'Do I still have the magic or whatever?' Because I've always felt that I could give this team an edge.''

Coach Mike Sherman said he thinks Favre is doing everything he can.

``There's only so much he can do at quarterback and I think he's doing plenty right now,'' Sherman said. ``He's playing well enough for us to win. We have to find ways to improve other than the quarterback.''

In the last three games, the three-time MVP has thrown for 833 yards and nine touchdowns with just one interception, but Green Bay has gone 1-2.

``I was never satisfied with just being here and being the starting quarterback,'' Favre said. ``I always wanted to be the difference-maker, and it got me in trouble at times. But I'm still here and have been able to play at a high level for a long time because I believed that. And that's what's been so disappointing this year. If we lost 30-0, then I don't think I could sit there and say that I was the difference.''

Still, it won't get easier for the Packers with road games at Cincinnati and Atlanta sandwiched by a visit by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the next three weeks.

``I think my hope is it doesn't get to 1-8,'' Favre said. ``If it does, from a personal standpoint I would be playing for pride.''

Green Bay must also deal with a who's who of top players on injured reserve, with starting running back Ahman Green (torn thigh tendon), backup running back Najeh Davenport (ankle) and top wide receiver Javon Walker (knee) all out for the year.

It leaves third-down back Tony Fisher, ReShard Lee and oft-injured Walt Williams to handle the load. Green Bay also signed two new wide receivers, Andrae Thurman and Taco Wallace, this week.

The only constant has been Favre, whose streak of consecutive starts including playoffs now stands at 231.

I would say that anybody that has watched Favre this year would say he's still got "it."

As a matter of fact I personally think he is playing better this year than he has in the recent past. He's cut down the turnovers and has been making it happen without a great oline, and without his best WR in Walker. Not to mention a diminished running game.

Favre is still one of the very best QBs in the league. Carson Palmer might be the only QB in the league playing better than him right now.
