Volek the next Brees?

Recommended Posts

Assuming McNair to Balitimore as being reported, Volek probably gets the starting job for a year.

Any chance he does a Drew Brees and leads the team to a decent season just after they used a high draft pick on a QB? Volek has always looked solid despite the crap in TEN.

I guess the difference is that Brees had LT and Gates. Volek has....Chris Brown and LenDale White

I wonder if TEN won't just start Young knowing that the team really suxors and this could happen?

My problem with Volek is that he put up good numbers, but never lead the Titans to a victories. So they just dont hold much stock in him being their future. Teams realized that when he was a UFA, and no one signed him even as a backup.

Hes just a placeholder for Vince

I'd put my money on Plummer being the QB to suddenly get the "wake up" call now that younger competition is in town. Volek just doesn't have much to work with.

As I remember it, Atlanta and Green Bay both made him offers, but he didn't want to sit behind Favre or Vick and went back to the Titans, knowing McNair would undoubtedly miss time, and retire soon.

I think Volek will suprise.

Yeah...Atlanta went after him pretty hard from what I remember. But that was before they Schaub emerged (in fact...it may have been before he was even drafted).

Anyway, I think that Volek will be an average but unspectacular starting QB. Contrary to belief, TN has put together a nice, little offensive array around him (not great but pretty decent). WR Drew Bennett is a quality WR when healthy. The rookie WRs (Brandon Jones, Courtney Roby, and Roydell Williams) all played very nicely at times. They probably have the best set of TEs in the league in Erron Kinney, Ben Troupe, and Bo Scaife--any of whom are more than capable of getting open and all of whom are good redzone targets. Plus, they added WR David Givens, who is young but talented and has experience on a winning team.

Not to mention the fact that the Titans improved their OL by adding C Kevin Mawae, by moving OT Michael Roos to his more natural left OT spot, by drafting RB LenDale White to provide a power-running option (something that the Titans have lacked since the early days of Eddie George), and even by drafting 7th round RB Quinton Ganther who is an excellent 3rd-down blocker and receiving option (again, something that the Titans have lacked recently).

Overall, I don't think that Volek will be the next Drew Brees. However, I think he could perform well given the general improvement of talent around him as opposed to last season. The big thing for Volek is avoiding injury, which I'm not sure that he can do.

Thus, I wouldn't be surprised if the Titans make a play for a FA QB or June 1 cut QB (IF McNair is cut or traded) to provide a solid backup for Volek. Yes...they drafted VY, but it would be in his best interest and the team's best interest if he wasn't forced into action THIS season because of an injury. As a result, if McNair (and his huge salary) is gone, I could definitely see the Titans signing a veteran cast-off from another team (i.e. Kerry Collins, Jay Fiedler, Todd Bouman/Jaime Martin, Gus Frerotte, Shaun King/Joey Harrington, etc.) for insurance purposes.

Just my thoughts...
