Gaffney, Not Bunkley, Faces Gun Charges

Recommended Posts

This is why some of these so-called "expert" sites are bullcrap:

RANDY PENNELL

Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jabar Gaffney was charged with unlawful possession of a handgun following a traffic stop - an arrest that occurred last month in New Jersey, but wasn't announced until Friday.

Gaffney had a permit to carry the weapon in Texas, but not New Jersey, Camden County prosecutors said Friday. The charge carries a maximum five-year sentence, but most first-time offenders get no jail time.

Gaffney, 25, was stopped on June 20 by police for driving erratically on the Walt Whitman Bridge, which connects Philadelphia and New Jersey. As Gaffney was reaching into the glove compartment, the officer saw the handgun, a loaded .380 semiautomatic that was registered to another person riding in the car.

Gaffney showed the officer his concealed-weapon license, but was charged and released on his own recognizance.

Prosecutors said Gaffney intends to apply for a program for first-time offenders that result in charges being dismissed upon completion of the program. Gaffney's attorney, Robert A. Greenberg, did not immediately return a message left Friday morning.

Eagles coach Andy Reid said the charges were the result of a misunderstanding.

"He had the gun registered in the state of Texas, he thought it was fine on his move up here," Reid said. "Jabar is not the kind of guy I'm too worried about. He's a pretty straight shooter. ... No pun intended there."

Gaffney signed as a free agent with the Eagles in the offseason following four seasons with the Houston Texans. Originally a second-round draft pick out of Florida in 2002, Gaffney has 171 career catches for 2,009 yards and seven touchdowns. He signed a one-year deal with the Eagles in March.

BUNKLEY BUST NEWS TO EAGLES

Profootballtalk.com has caught wind of strong rumors in Philly that unsigned Eagles first-round draft pick Brodrick Bunkley has been arrested for having a loaded handgun on the dashboard of his car.

The arrest, which per the rumors was made by the Delaware River Port Authority on one of the bridges connecting Pennsylvania to New Jersey, happened at least a week ago. An effort was made to get the charges dropped quietly, but prosecutors (we're told) have refused to do so.

Meanwhile, early word out of the Eagles organization is that they haven't heard of any arrest. In response, our source for the rumor says that official news of the charges won't break until Friday.

Bunkley was the fourteenth overall pick in the 2006 draft. He currently is unsigned even though the team opened camp earlier this week. The major sticking point reportedly has been the length of the deal -- the team wants six years, and Bunkley's agent, Gary Wichard, will agree only to a five-year term.
