Peyton or Warner for Week 1....

Recommended Posts

On ESPN, one of the talking heads was advising playing Kurt Warner of Tom Brady this week because Warner has the 49ers at home. Do you think the same applies when the option is Peyton at the Giants? Sounds crazy, but what do you think?

You never bench Peyton, period. Plus, think of the motivation he has playing against his baby brother on opening night. He will definitely want to show the world who the better Manning is.

I was waiting until the weekend played out before putting my two cents in on this...

I'm a first-time FF player, in an 8 team league, I have both P. Manning and Warner, and really thought it was a tough choice on who to start. Manning, because of all the obvious reasons and because you can't sit the #1 quarterback. Warner, more 300 yard games than Manning last year, without Edge, now he's got James and he's playing the f$ing 49'rs at home inside, with the emotional opening of a new stadium. Against them were that Manning's on the road, outdoors against a very good defense. Against starting Warner was that NO ONE benches Manning.

Personally, I loved the Warner v. 49'rs matchup so much that I figured for one week, it made perfect sense to bench Manning, and start Warner.

I read the boards here, a few other places, talked to some other FF's I know, and no one, not one single person agreed with me, most pointed out that it's my first time playing and so I decided that I'd listen to conventional wisdom. Partly because I'm not as confident in my knowledge of this game as people who've played it for years, partly because even if I'm wrong Manning's going to have a good game (just not great) and I'll get enough points other places that I'm going to beat the guy I'm up against this week anyways.

For the record, in my league, I gave up over 10 points by starting Manning over Warner. I still beat my guy by over 40 points (unless Ryan Longwell kicks 15 field goals tonight, then I'm screwed...) but it showed me to trust my gut.

Matchups matter, regardless of who the player is.

Period.

Points are points, and if it's obvious to you that Warner, on a particular week, is going to have a better game than Manning, start Warner. No one's so good they're above benching, and that points are points. Obviously this week it's a no-brainer to start Manning over Warner, and I expect that to be true every week, but on any given week, if you KNOW a guys going to give you 300 yards and 3 TD's vs. say 250 and 2 (which was my Warner vs. Manning guess before yesterday) then go with it. Warner was a better play coming into this weekend than Manning, the odds were much more in your favor with him, THIS WEEK.

Guessing matchups will probably screw me up at some point, and I left some points out there this week in other areas, but in the end, if I know someone on my roster's going to go off compared to anyone else, he's getting the start that week. Even if it's over Manning.
