Need help wiith recent "show theme"

I just watched last night's Criminal Intent. It was similar to Numbers last week. Premise was an older teacher who appears to have stopped "developing mentally" at 16 and ran off on a crime spree with a student. Since these shows are "loosely based" on real life, is anyone aware of the actual case? Strange defenses get stranger every year, so I am curious.
