ESPN HD >>>>> CBS HD

Recommended Posts

My CBS feed just doesn't look that great, especially in comparison to ESPN.

My sis-in-law (I'm guessing 34B) is a news director at a major CBS affiliate. She says their corporate folks still don't think the $$$ spent on HD broadcasting merits the return, so they cut every possible epense. It's no different than their standard broadcasts. Non-HD CBS, compared with other feeds, looks like some newsreel footage from WWII.

How are you getting the signal? Satellite, Cable, or Over the Air? It may have nothing to do with CBS or ESPN, it may be the system that is sending you the signal. I have Directv & my CBS feed is head & shoulders above ESPN (and everyone else for that matter). However, I get the networks OTA, that makes a huge difference.

The cable/satellite systems also dumb down some HD signals because of bandwidth issues.

Cable box

That would be the issue, more than a CBS HD vs. ESPN HD thing. IMO, the majority of HD viewers are sports viewers, so if your cable system is going to send out a lower signal, it's going to be to the network (CBS in this case) where there is less fast moving action, whereas ESPN has more live sporting events. I guess they think the nightly TV viewer isn't going to be as picky as a sports fan.

Personally, I think the practice sux, but they all do it. They could dump 25 shopping/religious/political and/or 15 HBO's/other bullshiat channels & get all the BW they need for the HD feeds.

I think everyone who can get a HD signal from a indoor/outdoor HD antenna should try it. Some people can't because of distance issues or their set doesn't have an ATSC tuner. You wouldn't believe the difference. If I know I'm going to be watching something in real time & not dealing with Tivo, I always switch to the OTA feed.

Are you talking about a dish? I just wish more programming was available in HD so I didn't have to switch my aspect, which I seem to have to do.

Then again I'm not all the technically savvy so I probably have something set wrong.

Nope, talking about a simple antenna that can be bought at Radio Shack for $20-$50. Go get one, try it, & return it if it doesn't work. I set one up on my parents new Sony LCD two weeks ago & they were getting HD feeds from N.C. AND Virginia with the antenna sitting in the sunroom. My Dad almost cancelled the Time Warner HD box install later that week, but then he realized he wouldn't get Discovery HD or a DVR.

Again, you must have what's known as an ATSC (or OTA) tuner on your set to get this to work. Any set made after March of this year (I think) is required to have it.

As far as aspect ratio, you're not going to be able to affect that, if the programming isn't in HD, you're going to get the black/gray sidebars. More HD programming & channels are on the way, but if the cable/sat companies dont solve the bandwidth issue, they are going to continue to screw with the signals. Directv has 2 sats going up this year & is switching to MPEG-4 compression, so they should be the leaders. They claim they are going to have 150 HD channels. Somehow, I doubt it, they've recently announced ESPN News HD, Weather Channel HD, & CNN HD, they have a long way to go.
