Draft Help in 20 team league

Recommended Posts

I am in need of wisdom here. I need a draft strategy for a non PPR 20 team league. Our scoring changed for WR's to get 1 point every 5 receptions ad our DEF teams get points for returns.

How would you go about it and Who would you try to draft? Please leave your link and I can assist. As long as its not a 20 team league. lol.

It would help if we knew what the roster requirements and scoring settings were. Have you been in this league before? What were the drafting trends?

The new PPR rule really lowers the value of the WR position, and they are considered deep this season, so I'd wait on those.

QB's will be huge, because there are not enough starters available for every team in your league to have a back-up. I'd make sure I had 2 solid starters, and may try to grab a 3rd as trade leverage. In most leagues the difference in scoring between the top few QB's and the players near the #20 range is ridiculous. A much bigger gap than between the top 3 RB/WR's and the RB/WR's in the #20 range.

There are not enough good TE's for every team to get one that is worthy of starting, so I wouldn't wait too long here. If you've got a guy that can put up 10 pts, compared to some other teams player who will be lucky to score 2, you'll be in great shape.

Kickers and DEF, you'll probably only get one crack at, as the waiver wire will be bare at both positions. I actually find value at these 2 positions in a league like this, seeing as so many teams will be forced to start position players that score very little.

As for RB's/WR's, I think every team will be spread so thin that it's hard to say grab as many as you can early or similar strategies. I would go for best player available, and try to get either quality back-ups, or cheap players with high upsides late in the draft. The thing about these positions is that there will always be someone new who becomes relevant on the waiver wire, so you may actually have a chance at getting help when you need it. This is much less likely at any other position in a league this deep.

Good Luck!

I just ran this scenario through Draft Buddy, with basic standard scoring along with your PPR requirements and FFtoday projections. QB's jump off the page. The top 15 QB's are valued so far above every other player, it's insane. The top 4 QB's have a value score of more than 5000, compared to Arian Foster's score of 246, Jimmy Graham's 124, and Calvin Johnson's 123.

So overwhelmingly it's QB high, then almost every starting RB before the WR's begin. Only Calvin, Gronk, and Graham fall into the 20-40 draft range, other wise it's top 15 QB's followed by top 25 RB's.

OK> So how would you approach this? Same way as everyone else by starting QB then RB's?

Those scoring and roster settings only amplify the results. You'd be a fool not to go QB in the first round, and I strongly suggest drafting 3 QB's. If it were me, my first 5 rounds would have 3 QB's and 2 Rb's.

Maybe 3 QB's in the first 5 rounds is a little over zealous, but I'm thinking about the trade opportunity that you will have with the team who's starter just got injured, and doesn't have a back-up. You'll be able to name your price.

How about rounds 6 on? Do you think return yards are worth trying to get a def team early?

Wow. With these scoring rules the teams with the first 4 picks have a HUUUUGE advantage in my opinion. 1 point for every 10 yards passing and 6 point pass TD's and only 1 point for every 5 receptions make Rodgers, Brady, Brees, Stafford ridiculous in this league, especially with 20 teams. Even guys like Ryan, Eli, Romo, Rivers, Peyton give you a huge advantage over the teams that pick QB last.

here is the letter from the League manager about the scoring changes. Do the score changes for the Defense raise their value:? Right now I am going qb,qb,rb,rb,wr,te,wr,wr,def.

The following changes have been made to continue to improve the league for competitive but balanced play from all of the drafted positions.

Receivers:

They were getting one point for each reception, they will now receive one point for five receptions.

Defense and Special Teams:

There weren't any point awarded to the special teams for return yardage on kick offs or punt returns, one point per ten yards in each will be awarded to the defense/specials team for their total return yardage.

This should make the receivers still valuable but not overvalued and improve the influence of defense/special teams when drafting.

This will dramatically effect the value of the Team DEF. You'll have to do some homework, but top return teams put up close to 2000 yards, where as the weak teams are under 1000. This could give your DEF a 100 point swing over the competition, and really create separation at the position. I'd also look at total points for the position last season, then add 100-200 points to see how they now compare with other positions. YOur probably going to need to create your own cheat sheet on this by adding projected points for each DEF to a projected returns yards. I have no idea where you could find that , but here is a link to last years return yards/team http://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2011/ You can use this sights for previous years as well to look for consistency. You may find that the DEF of your choice has a lot more value than a 7th or 8th round WR in a 20 team league.
