U.S. education officials fret over poor scores on global exam

Recommended Posts

WASHINGTON — Teens from Asian nations dominated a global exam given to 15-year-olds while U.S. students showed little improvement and failed to reach the top 20 in math, science or reading, according to test results released today.

Students in Shanghai, China’s largest city, had the top scores in all subjects, and students in Singapore, South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong weren’t far behind. Even Vietnam, which had its students participate for the first time, had a higher average score in math and science than the U.S.

The U.S. does lead the world in dollars per student.

Tom Loveless, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, cautions about reading too much into the results from Shanghai, which also dominated the test in 2009. The students tested are children of the elite. They are the ones allowed to attend municipal schools because of restrictions such as those that keep many migrant children out, he said.

From your link. No idea if some countries stack the deck with participants or not.

Its no wonder American students aren't topping these test. Parents don't get involved in their kids education. Throwing money into the system isn't going to change a thing.

The interesting thing is that Asian American students are kicking butt within the American Education System. :dunno:
