How to pick a kicker .. stupid question, but i really have no idea

Recommended Posts

I know a kicker is not a difference maker and performance varies week by week, but what is a general creteria in picking a kicker ?

Will kickers from offensive-minded teams do better than those from defensive teams? I figure those from teams that score TDs a lot will benefit from PAT, but not many FG opportunities.

Any other things I should consider?

Please help ... Leave links .. I will answer all.

:dunno:

Tough to answer. Those kickers on high scoring teams tend to add up the XPs but not the FGs as much.

I like to get kickers from teams with great defenses (BAL-Stover or CAR-Kasay). The games are usually close and they rely heavily on the FG's to keep things close. Just my $0.02

Several factors (in no particular order)

History of consistency.

Ability to hit beyond 40.

Defensive minded team.

Good offensive but Poor Red zone conversion (STL, ARI)

Dome or good weather home games.

Agree with Big D.

Another in that mold...

Kaeding in SD

though the Bears kickers sort of kill that theory.

The question I always ask myself is, "Who has a decent enough offense to move the ball, but won't punch it in with regularity?" Baltimore under Boller was a perfect example of this. Lewis could run and he could get the ball to WRs with a little consistency, but more often than not they'd sputter in the red zone.

Thanks for mine.

My 2 cents on K. They can make a difference. I look at good dome kickers ( 8 games at home inside). I also look a teams that have a ok offence but not great (but a good D) IE AZ, Det, STL.

good luck

I'd say look for teams who have trouble in the red zone but have good offensive production, this should lead to good FG opportunities. Next, I'd look at strength of schedule and find teams that also face pretty tough defensives so TD's are less likely and more FG opps are available. Dome is good but that really limits your choices.

To be honest...Kickers are so comparable that I wait until the last 2 picks...looks at my cheatsheet and grab the best available..preferably with a late bye so I only have to draft 1 !!! Same with Def's...there is always 1 or 2 on waivers that blows up (IE: SD DEF. so far!)

Thanks for your reply!

For what its worth - my draft strategy was to completely ignore the Kicker position until the very last round of the draft. So, I left it purely up to chance.

I ended up with Jeff Wilkins of the Rams.

In week #1, he was their entire offense, and hit a 40 and 50 yarder (more points).

I'm sure I'll have weeks where he'll be lucky to get a XP or two.

Load up on RB's as much as possible, wait until the very end to draft a K and even a DEF.
