I think it's fair that you admit you don't know what they do and are asking questions. I think we need a DoE most importantly for making sure all federal laws and policies regarding education are being met, the funding that goes to lower income schools(helping hire more teachers), and for the support for students with disabilities. Letting the states grade themselves is ripe for abuse. And as far as centralized system compared to 50 individual systems, 50 individual systems would be a 50x waste of money then one centralized system that does: There is no way 50 state programs are going to do that better than having it done under one umbrella, nor could they afford to do it.

Okay, it's a win for you, because it will reduce some funding for schools. That's not really the main priority of for the DoE, since the DoE doesn't provide the majority of funds for schools. Public schools in the country get some of there funding from the DoE, up to about 15% of their budgets. Of the $80B the DoE spent in 2023, $18B went to lower income schools, $15B was for providing money to help districts serve students with disabilities. Other things the DoE does is Managing college financial aid and federal student loans, Data collection on colleges and college students, and Tracking student achievement through the Nation's Report Card. Sending what back to the states? The states and local boards are already in charge of curriculum, the DoE doesn't set that.
