Picking the best candidate to grab really depends on your needs. Most players you grab off of the wire will only start 1-2 weeks in your lineup, so matchups matter a lot. Sure, Laurent Robinson might be the best waiver wire pick this week, but that doesn't do much good for you if you need to plug him in your lineup the next two weeks (Washington/Green Bay). But if you're looking for a more long term option, then you'd want a more consistent receiver who is holding his spot on the roster. If you already have depth at WR, and you want to just pick up someone who could turn into a stud, then your choice would likely be different again. The same goes for any position.
But that said, I think the following players stand out:
- Laurent Robinson - 10 looks in week 1, match ups against Minnesota, Jacksonville, Detroit, New Orleans thru week 10, and in a team with a terrible defense. Bulger just looks like a deer in headlights, but Robinson should still have some fantasy relevance. Next two week matchups don't look good however, so letting him sit on the wire & seeing how he pans out isn't a bad idea.
- Mark Clayton - 9 looks in week 1, improved Baltimore passing game, and Derrick Mason getting old. If Mason is too old & rickety, Clayton could replace Mason as Flacco's #1 option. And upcoming schedule doesn't look scary (@SD, Cle, @NE, Cin, @Min, Bye, Den, @Cin).
- Pierre Garcon - 5 looks, Gonzalez injury, and nice upcoming schedule (@Mia, @Ari, Sea, @Ten, Bye, @StL). Its unlikely that he'll replace Gonzalez, but he'll probably put up usable numbers while he's out.
- Correll Buckhalter - He starts, he gets 10 touches a game, and Moreno hasn't exactly looked impressive. Moreno will probably take more carries once he gets fully healthy, but upcoming matchups against Cle, Oak make him useful in the immediate future.
- Todd Heap - I'm not really a fan of Heap, as he hasn't done anything in the last two years. But he does get San Diego this coming week, who yielded a truckload of points to TE's last year.
