If the government you have is making your life worse, instead of better, you have the right to form a new government either by altering the current one, via voting, or abolishing it if voting won't solve the problem. The South chose the latter and fought for their right to throw off the government they felt was not providing guards for their future security.

Every state that wished to be a part of the United States. According to our Declaration of Independence, should a state choose to no longer be a part of the United States, that state has the right and obligation to do what it's citizens see fit for their future security.
