Not all NDEs are the same. They are heavily influenced by our beliefs in this life. I understand why you question the validity of consciousness remaining, but that's because you view the brain as creating consciousness. Our brains actually receive consciousness. They are part receiver and part filter. Our brains filter out the majority of reality so that we can function, and our brains are tuned to a specific frequency that receives our specific signals.
