It’s easy to trace your family back if they are from England and certain parts of France, you can go pretty far back as long as there were no early deaths or adoptions. The church did a very good job of keeping records with baptisms/marriages, that are all scanned and online today. It starts getting difficult pre-1500s because surnames weren’t universally used. So you’ll get things like John of Bedford for example
