Why is there so much anti-gay hatred? Woman shot and killed for having a rainbow flag in her store.

I'm not sure why you read it that way but of course not. But do I care if two adults are gay and minding their own business and living their own life? No. -

I think it's way better today than it was when I was growing up. I've actually changed my views on things quite a bit. It's not my place to judge others and it's not bothering me so it's something I wrote off to growing up in the time and area that I did. But I can say people even where I'm from in a small southern town have more ability to be openly gay now than back then. Back then it was something no one would have admitted. There's always been hate crimes but I doubt it's worse today. Now there is a lot of furor about the trans issue, especially when it comes to kids. To me that's a totally separate issue than having hate or even caring if an adult is straight or gay. -
I was born in Montgomery, lesson for there is you don’t roll down there without packing. Granted where they put the park there on the river was redeveloped nicely. Montgomery high schools though and facilities are rough. We played in the old Paterson Field when I was in h/s, home to the old Montgomery Rebels of the AA Southern League. Lance Parrish played for them coming up with the Tigers. That is nearby to the same area. You wouldn’t want your wife or kids near it these days. Montgomery PD you used to not F with. Back when Emory Folmar was mayor if you spoke wrong you might get a night stick to the jaw. Ever since then it’s been straight downhill though. They let crime take over the shopping areas and the city has deteriorated rapidly with most people leaving that could.

US Women's Soccer team loses 12 - 0 to retired men's team
Mark Davis replied to edjr's topic in The Geek Club
The bottom line is we’ve had more equality and women’s rights in sports than anywhere in the world. The very reason our women have been dominant is women here had advantages in training and development where other countries didn’t afford their women those opportunities. As time has gone on, some countries have taken women’s sports more seriously. Look at the results of the younger teams in the world tournaments. The days of the US women’s team being dominant are over. -
Illinois sheriffs prepare for 'America's most dangerous law' to come into effect
Mark Davis replied to seafoam1's topic in The Geek Club
Sure it's all or nothing for both sides and people throw around hyperbole constantly. But the Democratic Party of today isn't like the party of Bill Clinton. Someone with his policies could never win a primary today. For that matter, neither could Bush 41. The Democrats are much softer on crime today, see the Clinton era policies. I didn't quit voting for D's on a national level over that one issue, but it is among them. I'm not super stoked about either party's lack of fiscal responsibility but at least with the R's there is more runway to fix the issue with lower taxes even if the deficits were to run identical. -

As someone who used to actually vote D more than R in my younger days, this is an example of where D policy left what I could justify voting for. -
Jackson County to remove two statues of Andrew Jackson

It always astounds me how modern society wants to sit in judgment of individuals who lived centuries ago for committing the sin of living in the norms of their time. -
Larry Nassar stabbed multiple times in prison
Mark Davis replied to Ultra Max Power's topic in The Geek Club
I'm surprised it took this long. Prisoners don't like rapists and pedos. My guess is they had him segregated and at some point they slipped up. -
I wish more would boycott it here. The parallel lines at my local ones are always wrapped around the building. Started doing mobile ordering and parking and going inside.

Hang in there. When I was in college I got totally off caffeine and carbonated drinks. It was extremely stupid to start again.

Sure, I don't drink anyway so I'm not really worried about Budweiser one way or the other. I run a business too and it's up to ownership and management to be good stewards of it and run it properly. It's up to each company to learn how to market to their customers and keep their loyalty. The market will figure out who that is in the end and the bottom line will tell the story. I don't get too offended by company's like Budweiser or more a product I might tend to buy like Ben and Jerry's. If I want their ice cream in particular I'd buy it, but if I'm just in general wanting ice cream and not a particular type, yeah their public stances might be the tiebreaker where I'd buy another brand over them. But that's their choice, it was a conscious one. Maybe it works for them but that's not my concern nor is it the concern of any consumer. That's what marketing is, trying to drive consumer actions. Budweiser did that, maybe just not in the way intended but don't blame the consumer for their willing action. I just view it as the opposite side of the coin from a winning campaign like the old Nike "Just Do It" one. I never worried about folks on the left boycotting Chick Fil A either. It made the lines shorter for my chicken sandwich. If you like Bud Light, you probably got some discount pricing recently as well. Market capitalism works in wonderful ways.

When the subset starts with mental illness at 100% it was bound to happen.

Damn, people get their feelings hurt so easily these days. And even if they do, not sure why it's such a mental breakdown. What a bunch of softies our society has become.

What happens after the end of Affirmative Action?
Mark Davis replied to edjr's topic in The Geek Club
It's impossible for even well meaning folks in society to fix the issues with people who grow up with bad/absent parenting. We can argue the policies here, funding, etc. and honestly I feel like for the most part everyone even in heated discussions truly want what's best. Who among us wouldn't want lower crime and poverty? But lack of stable homes and good parenting breeds those problems and there really isn't anything anyone can do to fix that with governmental policies. I grew up in a crap school, even though admittedly there are far worse, but I was fortunate enough to have two parents who cared. My ACT scores also got me a long way in college and at the interview that landed me my first job out of college that score was a heavy part of what the guy who hired me talked about. -

My wife taught in a high poverty school at the start of her career. She still remembers the couple of parents who were involved and would show up to parent/teacher meetings because there were only a couple. One in particular had to work nights but they worked out a time to meet up. Not accidentally, those are among the students she had that are mostly doing well today. But the vast majority didn't care or in the gentler terms, didn't prioritize their child's education. A lot of our problems is we as a society are failing our children in our homes. We can dump all the money in we want, but the government can't fix bad/absent parents. And by the same token, it's no surprise our most desirable teachers don't want to teach in schools where those issues are pervasive.
