So I did some research and it’s not my imagination. The rate of penalties per play is way up this year - over 19% increase over the last 15 years average. Two trends are at play: 1. There are fewer plays per game 2. There are more penalties overall That’s a very bad mix from a viewer perspective. The NFL needs to figure this out. People have zero attention spans today, and it’s maddening to see a great play overturned because an overly officious ref called a highly subjective holding penalty on a player who was 15 yards away from the action. If a die-hard football nut like me is starting to lose interest, it ain’t good.
