From my brief listening and reading about him and the situation it feels like the best possible interpretation of his actions is similar to Brian Williams - adding himself into the action and lying about his involvement. But it really feels worse than that as they are peddling and selling the necklaces, framing it as though ticket sales is helping the cause, over embellishing the kidnapping aspect of the trafficking, things like that. Also, what seems to be the case on this movie is that the "based on" portion of the story is already based on things that didn't happen. It's based on Ballard's version of the incident, which doesn't seem to line up with reality in the first place.

Wow, still? Look, HT and followers I know it's hard for you to hold two thoughts in your head, but we will try. Just because it's "based on a true story" doesn't mean it's not fiction. Those two are both true statements. Real person/events + actors/characters/made up parts to a story = fiction movie. It's that creative license that the filmmakers have that make it a work of fiction. We were busting balls with the dumb examples, but yes - even in those "based on true story" movies there is a wide range of accuracy and how much of real life is in it. You can have Psycho to JFK to American Sniper. All fiction movies with varying levels of accuracy and sticking to real events.
