I’d maybe give Trump credit if I thought this was a plan to boost US manufacturing and not just a stunt from a reality TV narcissist. It can take years to get a manufacturing plant online. Why would a business do that when Trump changes his mind every few weeks? By the time the new widget factory is up and running he may have called the trade war off. Again, I know you don’t want to talk about Trump but his policies are a lot more relevant than Harris, Biden and Pelosi.

I don’t know where you live, but costs are objectively up this year over last year, so your experience is an outlier. I get the theory behind tariffs and the potential long term benefit. It’s sort of impossible to discuss it without talking about the way it’s being implemented. But this doesn’t look like a long-term plan to boost manufacturing to me. It’s a stunt. Sorry. The consumer price index showed prices up nearly 3% from July 24-25 and we’ve had positive inflation all year. So, costs on average are higher now under Trump than they were under Biden. There is definitely an argument to be made for everyone paying a little more for goods to boost US manufacturing and jobs. The thing is, Trump never made that argument. He beeched about inflation nonstop and promised lower prices. It’s a little late in the game for Don to start talking about belt tightening and the collective good while he runs a bitcoin grift from the Oval Office and takes his security entourage golfing on the public dime.
