LIBERATION DAY: USA and China agree to a 90 day pause on most new tariffs
The Psychic Observer replied to The Real timschochet's topic in The Geek Club
Trump said multiple times tonight on Air Force one that he's not going to tolerate trade deficits and that he's collecting billions of dollars from China. He has no idea how tariffs or trade work. -

Coming around to the idea that Republicans in Congress fearful for the country actually challenge trump on these tariffs to stop them. Maybe wishful thinking but I think it's likely now. -

LIBERATION DAY: USA and China agree to a 90 day pause on most new tariffs

The country is 100% behind the president on fixing a global system of tariffs that has disadvantaged the country. But, business is a confidence game and confidence depends on trust. President @realDonaldTrump has elevated the tariff issue to the most important geopolitical issue in the world, and he has gotten everyone’s attention. So far, so good. And yes, other nations have taken advantage of the U.S. by protecting their home industries at the expense of millions of our jobs and economic growth in our country. But, by placing massive and disproportionate tariffs on our friends and our enemies alike and thereby launching a global economic war against the whole world at once, we are in the process of destroying confidence in our country as a trading partner, as a place to do business, and as a market to invest capital. The president has an opportunity to call a 90-day time out, negotiate and resolve unfair asymmetric tariff deals, and induce trillions of dollars of new investment in our country. If, on the other hand, on April 9th we launch economic nuclear war on every country in the world, business investment will grind to a halt, consumers will close their wallets and pocket books, and we will severely damage our reputation with the rest of the world that will take years and potentially decades to rehabilitate. What CEO and what board of directors will be comfortable making large, long-term, economic commitments in our country in the middle of an economic nuclear war? I don’t know of one who will do so. When markets crash, new investment stops, consumers stop spending money, and businesses have no choice but to curtail investment and fire workers. And it is not just the big companies that will suffer. Small and medium size businesses and entrepreneurs will experience much greater pain. Almost no business can pass through an overnight massive increase in costs to their customers. And that’s true even if they have no debt, and, unfortunately, there is a massive amount of leverage in the system. Business is a confidence game. The president is losing the confidence of business leaders around the globe. The consequences for our country and the millions of our citizens who have supported the president — in particular low-income consumers who are already under a huge amount of economic stress — are going to be severely negative. This is not what we voted for. The President has an opportunity on Monday to call a time out and have the time to execute on fixing an unfair tariff system. Alternatively, we are heading for a self-induced, economic nuclear winter, and we should start hunkering down. May cooler heads prevail. - bill ackman regretting life decisions -
Japan’s benchmark Nikkei index plunged more than 8% on Monday, deepening a global stocks rout triggered by US President Donald Trump’s trade war.

President Donald Trump said Sunday evening that he is not intentionally engineering the ongoing sell-off, “but sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something.”

Much of the damage is already done anyway. And it's his idea to tariffs countries with a trade deficit. He's talked about this for years. -

It's interesting watching the trump talking heads this morning. Half of them say this is a temporary tariff policy while trump negotiates, the other half day this is permanent policy to bring back manufacturing. About a quarter of them say it's both. It's clear to me no one knows what is happening except the insane old man who is golfing. -

Our economy is crashing, dead soldiers arrived home, and trump is golfing with the Saudis. He doesn't care about you. -
Nice to see so many Americans voicing their opinions and standing up for justice.

This isn't a phase it's a trade war. The last time we saw this we had the great depression. -
The market hasn't fully priced in the "reciprocal' tariffs yet as there is still a chance he will negotiate them away this weekend. I don't believe that happens and there will be another leg down Monday. If I'm right I save 20%. If I'm wrong I lose 2%. I'll trust my gut.

It's not a Dem v R thing. Trump 45 didn't do anything. W didn't do anything. The only time we actually got serious was when Clinton and Gingrich worked together and we actually ran in a surplus for a sliver of time. https://www.investopedia.com/us-debt-by-president-dollar-and-percentage-7371225 -

No. DOGE is not achieving any meaningful savings and they are operating in a haphazard way. Anyone who thinks DOGE is saving anything is not informed. In some ways they have reduced potential revenue with the IRS cuts and research cuts. DOGE will not be a thing for much longer. We need to get serious about Social Security, Medicaid/Medicaire, and National Defense. -

Agreed that the debt is unsustainable and needs to be addressed. I just strongly disagree that tariffs are the way to do it. We need to grow the economy, cut spending and increase revenues. We're doing the opposite. -

What is the greater good? Personally I think previous generations would be ashamed that we elected an autocrat and allowed him to break the law and the Constitution including sending legal residents to foreign prisons, extortion of private business and elimination of services that save lives here and globally. I don't see how accepting losing your retirement savings, losing your job and paying extraordinary taxes is for the greater good but please enlighten me. -

The arguments and lies they use to support this nonsense is sad but entertaining.
