Draft Dodger Donald ducked military duty five times with daddy's help

Dodging and deferring: Trump wasnât the only POTUS to avoid the draft Jan 21, 2021 It is quite appropriate and important that on the day of the inauguration, the new president, Joseph Biden, and three of his four immediate predecessors visited Arlington Cemetery where many of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for this country are laid to rest. In addition to honoring these brave men and women, I hope that President Biden and former presidents Bush and Clinton reflected on the fact that some who are buried at Arlington are there because they â like Trump â avoided being drafted in 1968. Therefore, someone who probably could not afford college, or have the background or connections, had to go into the Army. Bill Clinton received educational deferments from 1963 to 1968 so that he could attend Georgetown, and after graduating, accept a Rhodes scholarship to attend Oxford. However, in 1968, when the law that allowed men to receive deferments even for graduate or law school was changed, Clinton received his draft notice. But, to avoid being drafted in 1968, Bill Clinton used his connections to get permission to join the ROTC at the University of Arkansas law school. This permitted him to avoid the draft and allowed him to return to Oxford to complete his masterâs. Moreover, in 1969 when he was returning from England, President Nixon instituted a draft lottery. When Clinton received a number that would have ensured that he would not be selected, he reneged on the commitment to join the ROTC with no penalty. After graduating from Yale in 1968, President George W. Bush used his family connections to allow him to enlist in the Texas Air National Guard for a six-year stint as a pilot. He did this because it became clear that President Johnson would not activate the Guard to go to Vietnam but would rely instead on the active forces to fight that bloody conflict. Therefore, it became almost impossible to get into the Guard in 1968, especially for someone like Bush who had a low score (in the 25th percentile) on the pilot test, and also had an arrest record. Moreover, in Bushâs last two years, his attendance at Guard meetings dropped off, he lost his pilot certification but, unlike most of these, he was not recalled to active duty. Biden not only received deferments for his undergraduate days at the University of Delaware, but for three years of law school at Syracuse University. When his education deferments expired in 1968, Biden requested a deferment based on the fact he had asthma as a teenager. He did this in spite of the fact that, according to his own book, he was a star athlete in high school and in college played intramural sports and was a lifeguard in the summer. By having someone else go to Vietnam instead of them, these three presidents were also able to use the two years that they would have had to spend in the military to begin the careers that launched them to the White House. Clinton parlayed his Rhodes scholarship into admission into Yale Law School, which is among the most competitive law schools in the country, running for Congress and becoming attorney general of Arkansas about seven years after he avoided service, something he could not have done had he had to divert his career by spending time in the military before attending law school. During his time in the Guard, Bush not only did not deploy but missed several weekend drills while going to Harvard Business School and working on the campaigns of at least one senator. As soon as he received his asthma deferment, Biden ran for local office and within two years after he would have been discharged from the Army, assuming he was not wounded or killed, he was elected to the Senate. I wish that these three men had had parents like my dad. When I took my draft physical, I was told that I needed to get a waiver to go into the service because I had polio when I was 9 years old. My dad told me that we did not have deferments in our house and did I think because I was the first in my family to go to college that I was better than the paper boy (who tragically was killed in Vietnam)? Moreover, my younger brother was also drafted and sent to Vietnam a couple of years after me. In one of the Democratic political debates, Congressman Seth Moulton, D-Mass., said something that I wish these three presidents would think about as they went to Arlington: âIâd like to meet that American hero who went to Vietnam in Donald Trumpâs place. I hope he is still alive.â Lawrence Korb a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress served as an assistant secretary of defense in the Regan administration. He served four years on active duty as a naval flight officer and retired from the Navy Reserve with the rank of captain. Maine Mom: My Daughter âWent to Warâ in Tim Walzâs Place After Order to Join Minnesota National Guard Steve RobinsonAugust 12, 2024 A Maine mother says her daughter, Nicole M. Dunham of Orrington, was called up to join the Minnesota National Guard as a convoy support medic in 2005âthe same year Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz retired from the Minnesota National Guard in order to skip a deployment to Iraq. âNicole Marie Dunham went to war in place of the Governor of Minnesota,â said Mary Dunham in a Monday morning interview with WVOMâs George Hale and Ric Tyler Show. âMaybe not his rank, but my daughter from Maine went to war, and he didnât, he didnât fulfill his commitment. Nicoleâs commitment was over. She went. No, she didnât replace him specifically, but everybody had to move forward to fill a slot that he left.â âHer commitment was to the state of Maine, then to the United States. Sheâs the only person that was in that unit, the one, [in the] 125th Field Artillery Battalion that wasnât from there, and [Walz] didnât go,â she said. Gov. Walz, selected last week to be Vice President Kamala Harrisâs running-mate for what is likely to be the Democratic 2024 presidential ticket, continues to face withering criticism for false claims he has made for nearly two decades about his military service. Although Walz did serve in the U.S. military for 25 years, he has subsequently embellished his rank and falsely claimed to have taken part in combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2005, Walz retired from the Minnesota National Guard weeks months before his unit was slated for deployment to Iraq â a deployment that saw the unit take multiple casualties. Dunham enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1998, completed training as an emergency, and subsequently served in the U.S. Army Reserve from until 2005 in 309th Combat Support Hospital Division. Dunham received the Army Achievement Medal, National Service Defense Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon and the Armed Forces Reserves Medal, according to her family. Her obituary describes her call-up to join the Minnesota National Guard as follows: In 2005, She proudly served her country as a Specialist in the Operation Iraqi Freedom Campaign with 34th Inventory Division known as the Red Bulls. Her Mission was providing Medic support on convoys traveling from Tallil Airbase to Bagdad Airport as well has humanitarian missions for the people of Iraq. She was Honorably discharged in 2007. Dunham passed away on Sept. 13, 2018. Although Dunham said her daughter was not killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom, she said Nicole was frequently in harmâs way and returned from her deployment a changed person. âNobody wants to go to war,â Mary Dunham said, of her daughter. âNo one wants to go. She went.â Even prior to the spotlight landing on Walzâs military record, Dunhamâs presence in the unit was unusual because she was the only member of the unit who wasnât from Minnesota. But Mary Dunham didnât immediately connect her daughterâs service in the Minnesota unit to Walzâs early retirement until soldiers she had served with â other members of the so-called âRed Bullsâ â began reaching out to her on Facebook. Nicole M. Dunham with other members of the Red Bulls Gov. Tim Walzâs Stolen Valor Several U.S. military veterans who knew Walz and served with Walz have confirmed that he has misrepresented, embellished, and distorted his military career during his subsequent career as a member of congress, governor, and now as a vice presidential candidate. Since retiring and entering politics, Walz has consistently represented his rank as Command Sergeant Major; however, Walz never official received that rank due to his abrupt retirement. Walz has often portrayed himself as a combat veteran by talking about carrying a firearm in theaters of war and by allowing people, such as former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), to refer to him as a combat veteran; however, his foreign service was limited to Italy. Ret. Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas Behrends, the man who filled Walzâs suddenly vacated leadership position, has been outspoken about Walz embellishing his rank, telling Fox Newsâ Laura Ingraham that the truth behind the claim is âfar darker than a lot of people think.â âHeâs used the rank that he never achieved in order to advance his political career,â Behrends said. âI mean, he still says heâs a retired command sergeant major to this day, and heâs not. He uses the rank of others to make it look like heâs a better person than he is.â John Kolb, the now-retired Battalion Commander who ran Walz and Dunhamâs former unit, also confirmed in a sharply worded Facebook post that Walz misrepresented his military service, specifically the timing and nature of his retirement. â[W]hen the demands of service and leadership at the highest level got real, he chose another path,â Kolb said. According to Kolb, Walz retired early from the MNG, did not complete Sergeants Major Academy, broke his enlistment contract, and did not successfully complete any assignment as a Sergeant Major. Kolb, who also confirmed that Behrends was selected to go in Walzâs place, said Behrends âran toward and not away from the guns.â While Kolb said he had no opinion or criticism of Walzâs prior 25 years of military service, he did make clear that Walz has subsequently exaggerated his rank. âHe did not earn the rank or successfully complete any assignment as an E9,â Kolb said. âIt is an affront to the Noncommissioned Officer Corps that he continues to glom onto the title. I can sit in the cockpit of an airplane, it does not make me a pilot. Similarly, when the demands of service and leadership at the highest level got real, he chose another path,â he said. -
