Hi ogtay. Don't think I can help you out for Monday, but let me put this on the list for next year. We'll see. Sounds like a good idea to me.

I couldn't wait for Mike (he's done enough already) so I took the next step although I did it on a seperate spreadsheet so as not to corrupt my compiler by accident. If you understand VBD then this is just the next logical step in converting VBD to auction based pricing. Here's the basic of what I did;

Take each position list w/ F pts. and calculate VBD in next column.

Next calculate the total VBD of all starters at all positions.

Next figure out total $ available (teams x salary cap). You may want to divide this by % of starter (starters/roster limit) so you save some money for bench players and FA's. Note; my league is all starters so I will spend everything, but if you are held to a cap throughout the season budget accordingly!

Divide total $ by total VBD to get an $/VBD value.

Take this $/VBD value and multiply it against the VBD column to get a maximum bid for each starter based on their relative VBD. Round off numbers to even bids.

Then repeat the process for bench players using the % of total $ projected for reserves.

Honestly, I gleamed bits of this idea from various articles. I even took it the next step (to see if I could) and made a column for adjusted $ values based on preceeding bids (unsophisticated buddy). When people over bid on the studs it lowers the amount of monies available for other players so their maximum bids decrease. Conversely, when you get players cheap, other bidders should note that the maximum bids increase.

This is my first auction draft (many years of serpentine) on Wednesday & I can't vouch for the success but VBD hasn't hurt me yet!! By the way, since I'm the rookie I won't be bringing my laptop w/ my poor man's buddy. I may not have much of a reputation but that would probably doom me for life at work. I'll just be smug using the sheet w/ FFToday's compiler and extrapolated to auction figures. Walk in with one sheet of paper, bid outrageously at first, feign rookiehood as long as possible and then steal the draft! :cool: At least that's how it worked in my dream

:rolleyes:

Sounds like a plan :rolleyes:

treewarden, can you send me over your spreadsheet with the auction calcs? Not that I've given this a lot of thought, but the one thing I think could be an issue is the step "sum up all the VB Pts for all the starters". How do I tell the sheet where to start summing and where to stop based on number of "starters"? Keep in mind I'm trying to make something flexible for a lot of different people/leagues (i.e. vastly different starters), so it isn't as easy as just summing a group of cells. The size of the group of cells changes. Haven't got my head around this yet.

Of course, it is almost midnight and I just came back from a 14 team draft where some guy drafted 5 TEs for his team!?! I haven't got my head around that one either :confused:

Mike,

I'm sending it from home addy so don't get confused :eek: Remember it's crude compared to your fine work, but with a little incentive :rolleyes: I might be persuaded to dig deeper and fine tune it for inclusion to next years edition!

As always, great job on the site!!

P.S. Let me know if there are ever any job opportunities...why not get paid like you for pursuing your hobby? :D
