Kevin Barry

Recommended Posts

Kevin Barry just signed a two year deal with the Packers according to scout.com.

Interesting. I heard something about him really getting a shot a guard this year. We'll see if that happens. At the very least, it provides much needed tackle depth. Another win for Ted "Why isn't he signing anybody" Thompson.

Cool. Barry's a good player. I don't know if he can make the switch to guard, but I'd love to see him try.

Hard to judge Thompson just yet. He's still cleaning up after Sherman.

Of course, I really hedge my bets on his hiring McCarthy. Smells like Ray Rhodes and Aaron Brooks in here.

Seems to be a lot of signings today at 1265. I thought the Packers were sitting on their hands, while they were going out to scout college players.

And the beauty is, we most likely still have the most cap room. Probably by a wide margin.

I want to see how much Barry signed for. If it is reasonable I like the signing, he is a solid # 3 tackle who comes in as a TE in jumbo packages. I have serious doubts about him having the feet to play guard, especially in the new blocking scheme. But he is a great backup T.

I really like the resigning of Barry. I would like to see the Packers put him in at starting Right Tackle, and move Tauscher over to Right Guard. I know he played there in the past couple of seasons when they had to move around the line because of injury problems. This woiuld keep the right tackle position filled with a solid player and greatly improve the right guard position. It may hurt without having Barry for the U-71, but with the new zone blocking scheme, that may not be needed anyways.

Agreed...nothing more than a backup T, or used in the U-71...if he can make the move to guard...that would be nice too.

Good to keep a good guy around as well.

Maybe some of the whiners will quiet down on TT not doing something. Oh no...he did not go out and overpay the big name guys the first 4 days of free agency...the world is ending....

Barry Will be Given Chance to Start

http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=408563

On Wednesday, Barry, an unrestricted free agent from Racine, signed a two-year contract to be exactly what he originally signed on to be with the Packers: an offensive lineman. Barry rejected an offer from the Detroit Lions in favor of returning to his home state team where he was told he will be given a fair shot to be a starter.

"I really want to see Kevin play," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "He was always playing tight end; there weren't many opportunities to see him on the offensive line. We want to give him that opportunity. I think we have four really good tackles now."

Barry's natural position is right tackle, but the Packers may give him a look at guard, a position for which he thought he would compete last year. Under their new zone blocking system, the Packers won't be using a "jumbo" package that features Barry as a second tight end and they'll need him to shed weight if he's going to play inside.

Because the zone system requires the guards to be able to move laterally, there's some question whether Barry, 26, can fill the role.

"We'll see how he moves," Jagodzinski said. "He's powerful enough to do that. I think he's around 330. He needs to slim down. I told him he can get it off now or he can do it when camp starts. It'll be a lot harder if he does it when camp starts.

"It's not so much body weight, it's body fat. I'd like it under 20%. The heavier he is the harder it is for him to come back from injury."

Both McCarthy and Jagodzinski said they were intrigued by the possibilities with Barry and would find a place for him in the starting lineup if he was one of the top five linemen. The possibility exists he could start at right tackle if MarkTauscher is moved to guard, but that doesn't seem likely, especially if the Packers can add Arizona guard Reggie Wells, a restricted free agent whom they hosted on Sunday.

Barry's agent, Russell Wittman, said his client was thrilled to be able to return to Green Bay. He said he enjoyed his visit to Detroit Tuesday where he met with former Packers line coach Larry Beightol, but in the end he wanted to return to the Packers.

"Green Bay came in with a great package and Kevin was ecstatic," Wittman said. "It includes a signing bonus and a roster bonus and is basic with the base salaries. It's a straight deal."

Wittman declined to offer financial specifics.
