Drafting from the 9th spot in a 12 teamer

Recommended Posts

i actually only took green twice, at the position, he was the best QB available. there seems to be a group of "older" Qb there around that time, Green, Warner, Bledsoe, Favre, McNair, and sometimes Plummer, all of which I think are a tremendous value.

I like Green specifically because he seems to quietly put up solid numbers every year. i started comparing his stats with the other guy I targeted, McNabb, and I am starting to think I would rather build a little depth at RB or WR or even grab a solid TE in the fifth instead of McNabb and then grab one of the other guys I mentioned later in the draft.

Another guy I have targeted a lot is Steve McNair, mainly because this guy is going into an offensive powerhouse. Derrick Mason, Mark Clayton, and Todd Heap are going to be huge. Billick doesn't get a lot of credit because his QB have stunk but with him and the Giants cast off on the staff, McNair could enjoy some really nice numbers. I think Heap may have his best season yet. I like McNair a lot because I can usually grab him in the 10th as well.

I totally agreee with you on waiting on a QB this year. I know that Green has been solid in the past, but I am hesitant to draft a QB with no name wide outs on a run first team, and I was just curious if you draft him on past reputation or if there was another reason that you like him this year. Personally, I would be happy if Bledsoe fell to that position, as I think he has a great many weapons and would gamble on him as my starter this year.

I also like McNair, along with David Carr, for a second QB. He has a connection with Mason and like to use his TE (I also think Heap will have a career year). Carr, who has underperformed because of protection problems, now has Kubiak's system and a killer WR duo in Johnson and Moulds. Is Carr being drafted around the same time as McNair?

OK, here is the latest draft. I finally had all the pieces fall exactly where I wanted them. Some might question my runningbacks but I am perfectly confident going into the season with these guys. Droughns is solid, Dunn is good year in and year out and Taylor will be a nice fill in for the bye week. I am of course relying on my receivers and TE to carry me. I think they are super strong. I have gone RB/RB for so many years that it was tough to convince myself to give this a try but I think in a PPR, this is the way to go if you are picking in the 7-12 spot.

WR Steve Smith CAR 1.09 9

One other thing I noticed is that once we get closer to the season, when most leagues draft, the running back situations should all be pretty clear. There were still some quality backs on the board that I over looked simply because I didn't know about their situations. In the third round I had my choice of these guys:

Droughns

Dunn

Taylor (if he wins the job) Mewelde (If he wins the jon)

Foster

Lewis

Dillon

Cedric Benson (if he wins the job) Thomas Jones (if he wins the job)

Tatum Bell (if he wins the job) Ron Dayne (if he wins the job)

Kevan Barlow (if he wins the job) Frank Gore (if he wins the job)

Ahman Green (if he wins the job) Sam Gado (if he wins the job)

Fred Taylor (I grabbed in the 5th)

Dominic Rhodes (if he wins the job) J. Addai (if he wins the job)

Chris Brown (if he wins the job) Lendale White (if he wins the job)

But the WR that were available to me at the bottom of the third were not #1 material in my opinion and I would not be too excited about having them as my number 1 guys with less stellar WR's to choose from as my number two guys. At my pick 3.09 these guys were available: Roy Williams, Andre Johnson, Hines Ward, Plaxico Burress, Donald Driver, Joe Horn.

When reading this, please keep in mind that the league I am mocking for is a point per reception league and with Steve Smith and T.O. as my starters, I think I would be pretty tought to beat even with Drougns, Dunn and Taylor as my 1,2,3 RB.

Another day, another mock. Pretty similar to the last one, just trying to get a feel for who will be where when I draft. This one was against completely different people and it went a little different than I expected, some guys went earlier, like QB, and some went later, like WR. I grabbed Moulds all the way in the 12th, I was surprised with that one.

Latest Draft. Not overwhelmed with the results. Tried to grab a RB first again to see what I could come up with. Not really that impressed with the results. I am not so sure I would do that much better with Lamont Jordan and Jamal lewis than I would if I had Rueben Droughns and Warrick Dunn with two solid WR. Dont know though. We'll have to see how it all shakes out in the end. I think my WR are still pretty strong, especially if Galloway can put together another strong season.

Great thread with some very good analysis.

I actually am drafting from the 9 hole in the "Jerry Porter league" within the Geek League forums. All 12 guys are knowledgeable guys on this board and under the circumstances I think I did pretty well so far....

1.09 RB Steven Jackson

2.04 RB Willis McGahee

3.09 WR Chris Chambers

4.04 WR Plaxico Burress

5.09 WR Derrick Mason

6.04 QB Daunte Culpepper

7.09 WR Matt Jones

8.04 RB Frank Gore

9.09 TE Kellen Winslow

10.04 Bears D/ST

11.09 QB Jon Kitna

12.04 RB Ryan Moats

Still about 6 more rounds to go....but in retrospect I'm very happy that I went RB-RB early since I can't envision my WR corp being any better than it currently is even if I had gone RB-WR...and my #2 RB would have been crap compared to the potential McGahee brings

First off, great friggin team. I haven't had the option of Jackson and McGahee even once, nor have I had the change to grab Chambers at the 3.09 spot. Very impressive. Is this a PPR league? If it isnt, things are a little different. I would never go WR-WR in a non PPR draft, WR just dont hold enough value to do that without PPR. If it is, you have put together a really solid team here. In either league you are really strong and you have decent enough depth to carry you through the bye weeks, hopefully you wont have any injury concerns at RB because I wouldnt want to rely on Gore and Moats to start for me for any length of time.

It is PPR....and the reason I was fortunate enough to get Chambers at 3.09 is the same reason why my backup is Frank Gore....because all 11 of my competitors went absolutely RB crazy in the middle rounds. We start 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 QB, and a DEF and K......I've got 4 great wide outs in my opinion....and I really think Gore is going to be a nice #3, I just think Barlow's days are over and Norv Turner's system produces pretty good running backs...plus he's never been an RBBC guy and Gore fits the profile that Turner tends to look for. But yeah...my rb depth isn't what I would like but I think I more than make up for due to the fact my starting lineup as whole is so friggin strong.......

I also think McGahee is going to catch alot more passes under the new regime in Buffalo. People forget this kid has PHENOMENAL hands and he did alot of his damage at the "U" off screen and swing passes out of the backfield. With Faulk gone S Jax's reception should be decent as well.

Like I said before...great thread.....

Just finished a draft this morning. I decided to wait as long as I could to grab a QB. Got McNair and Kitna. Not thrilled about either but I love the possibilities that Kitna brings with the new offensive system that turns grocery baggers into MVP's. I love the depth I got in this draft and I think Jeremy Stevens is a steal that late. I am solid at every position this time and my only weak spot was Dillon, but I grabbed Maroney early to make sure I would get him. It didn't hurt me at all. I am really pleased with this line up and it really gives me some flexibility at the WR position on the bye weeks of my big two.

*Just realized that my 3 RB have a bye on the same week.......back to the drawing board on that one...

Another bye week blunder for me. Smith and Fitz are on the same bye week. :ninja: I am really deep at WR though in this draft. Dont know about the RB. My theory was really destroyed because of bye week problems.

4th of July Mock, happy 4th everyone. This one I did pretty much the same thing, grabbed TO and Fitz instead. I am sure I will be looking to grab Steve Smith and TO in my actual draft, but I am considering this set up as well. I really liked the idea of Steve Smith and Fitz but I dont like the idea of them being on the same bye week, even though it would only be for one week. I still may do that anyway. I just love the thought of having TO. He is going to dominate this season. My WR are super strong. Muhs and Mason as my bye week fillers would rock in a real draft.

Droughns and Dunn are the two I really want at RB but Dunn was long gone at my pick this time. I like Foster a lot too, especially as my number 2 guy. Curtis Martin might be a steal. I have been taking Fred Taylor but I finally realized that he has the same bye week as Droughns so that wasnt helping me at all. Gore could easily be the starter in San Fran and with Norv Turner there, he could be a nice sleeper pick.

Ben Watson is an absolute steal that late in my opinion. This guy is going to catch a ton of balls this year.

My QB are a little questionable......ok a lot questionable but if McNair can stay healthy and Martz can work his magic with Kitna, I would be set. Two REALLY big ifs though. In hind sight, I would have grabbed Plummer instead of adding RB depth with Mewelde Moore. Plummer went two picks before me so I could have grabbed him the round before. I dont think Moore would be there that late in a real draft anyway.

I am really starting to like this pick. I was even offered the #7 spot in exchange but that is just way too high to take TO. Would help me out in the third though to grab a better RB. This is the team I wouldn't mind going into the season with.......

All I can say is texasmouth should change his name to MockMachine.

One thing that is cool about the guys I draft with is that we finish an entire mock in about 55 minutes so doing one every other day or so is no big deal. I usually do it while my daughter is asleep. Speaking of which, my daughter is at her grandmas house so i will be mocking yet again today.

maybe you should try drafting from a different spot now.

This is the spot I have in my main money league. I am in another dynasty. Dont know my position in the other drafts.

Last two new mocks. The second one, i went with RB-WR-WR-RB. I like what I ended up with. Strong starters and strong back ups.

You just really like moulds.

if it's ppr I've been liking your wr/wr rb/rb/rb best... though not 100% on your rhodes in the 5th pick. or green/plummer in the 7th insted of the 8th

I have found that if I dont grab Green or Plummer in the 7th, they arent there in the 8th.

though what might help you is if you posted who ws generally available to you in what round you picked. we do see this through your rose colored glasses not knowing your other options.

As someone who picks 9th in a 12-team league, that's really helpful. OK I'm slightly different in that I get to retain LJ as my first round pick, but I'm very likely to go WR in the second and this has pretty much confirmed the wisdom of that.

Someone please tell the thick Brit, though - what do the numbers mean after the round and pick number? e.g. "RB Rudi Johnson CIN 1.09 5. Sorry if it's obvious.

I will jump all over McNabb if he falls to the 5th round...somehow I doubt he will last past 3rd round in my draft.

He is in for a big bounce back year. Top 5 QB for sure but I think he will be top 3.

I can't see it - still don't believe he's got the weapons to throw to.

The number after the pick number is the BYE WEEK.

When has McNabb ever had weapons to throw to? Terrell Owens for two years and that was it. He has an up and coming young WR in Reggie Brown, a solid tight end in LJ Smith, and the always capable Brian Westbrook.

Of course it is. Thanks for that, would have been bugging me for ages.
