Broncos | Cobbs looking for a chance; may get it

Sun, 9 Jul 2006 19:12:02 -0700

Bill Wilson, of the Daily Times-Call, reports Denver Broncos RB Cedric Cobbs wants a shot at the team's starting running back job and he just may get that chance. With training camp three weeks away, Cobbs has progressed to the point where he has an underdog's chance to earn carries for the Broncos. The starting job is far from stable, with RBs Ron Dayne and Tatum Bell holding the top tailback spots at the moment. If nothing else, Cobbs has caught head coach Mike Shanahan's attention. "He's competing for the starting job. He hasn't missed a workout and was working out extremely hard," said Shanahan, who thought highly of Cobbs in college and likes his running style. "Hopefully he can make some strides once we put the pads on." For now, Cobbs is happy only to have a chance. There's plenty of past history to prove there are opportunities for an underdog to become a star in Denver.

Add Cedric Cobbs as a potential candidate to win the Denver RB sweepstakes lottery. Shanahan had his eye on Cobbs in the 2004 NFL draft, but the team had the chance to draft Tatum Bell in an earlier round. This removed the team's need for a RB, but Shanahan likes to hang onto those scouting reports and now Cobbs is part of the soap opera otherwise known as the Denver RB situation. Shanahan recently told the Denver Post, "We felt very fortunate to get him (Cobbs) on our football team when he was released. Now, he's competing for the starting job." The Denver run blocking scheme is legendary, and the starting RB in Denver is always a fantasy football gold mind every year. The problem is that no one ever knows what Shanahan is thinking. Many fantasy teams have been burned in the past as Shanahan made a game time announcement with a different player as a starter. Consequently, you simply cannot put much (if any) stock in statements coming from Shanahan's mouth; however, Cobbs is a player to keep filed away in the back of your mind as the preseason (and regular) season develops. The talented (but often injured) Cobbs is currently listed as the third-string RB in Denver, behind Ron Dayne and Tatum Bell.
