Advice needed on league setup

Recommended Posts

I'm considering joining a local league that is a little different. It's a 16 team league with the lineup pretty standard except for one glaring exception:

1 QB

1 RB

2 WR

1 PK

1 DEF

1 Flex

Now, the flex position has to be either a QB, WR, or a Fullback. It can't be a player that has the title of RB/FB. I guess the commish is determining this based on a depth chart from nfl.com or somewhere like that. Points for touchdowns are all the same I believe, so this places a high value on the top QBs. Standard scoring for the most part. As you can see, we'll only start 1 RB instead of the normal two or three in most leagues. Also, there is NO trading in this league which is very odd. I'm not one that gets involved in many trades, so this doesn't impact me, but I did find it odd. Another strange aspect is that the draft is somewhat a serpentine style, but there's a variation. We'll have 12 rounds but after each two rounds the serpentine is reversed meaning the following:

If I have the first pick here's my draft order by round:

1.1

2.16

3.16

4.1

5.1

6.16

7.16

8.1

9.1

10.16

11.16

12.1

Again, a very strange/odd/different way to do the draft. I'm always up for a different way a league is ran, but this seems a little odd. It's only $50, so I think I might try it for a year just to see how it works.

What are your thoughts? If I've given you a miagrane, I apologize.

You are going to want 3, maybe 4 solid QB's in this format. The Flex spot screams QB over the other postions. So with injuries and bye weeks I would think you would want 3 starting QB's in the first 5-6 RD's. Since there are 16 teams and only 32 starting QB's and many that are suspect they are at a extreme premium. Expecially the better ones that stay healthy.

I could easily see myself drafting QB, QB, QB, RB in this format. Then, maybe even another QB in the next couple RD's if a starter is available. Too bad there's no trading. I could see someone running into QB injuries and trading for a mid level QB and giving up a top 8 RB.

Surfice it to say that I would not play in this goofy league. No trading is stupid.

Yeah, I agree this league is a little odd to say the least, but like I said for $50 I'll try it for a year. I'm definitely picking up two quality QBs early for the simple points you made. I've been in weirder leagues than this one and I might get lucky and make some coin.

Now that I've read the rules I made one glaring ommission. This looks like a TD only league. I don't care for TD only leagues.

TD only leagues are a total waste. If you still plan to play, QB, QB, QB is the only way to go. Good luck but this league sounds like pure frustration and full of novices.

Yeah, which is disappointing. This is through one of the sports bars here where I live and I know they've had leagues in the past. The dude that is running the league asked for my input, so I'm going to strongly suggest a performance scoring league. Otherwise I agree with your draft strategy.
