Unusual League Setup

Recommended Posts

I have been doing fantasy football for a while and was asked to join this new league. You start 1 QB, 1 RB, 1WR, 1 K, 1 Defence and 2 Flex players (RB or WR). From the understanding I'm getting is that I could start 3 RBs and 1 WR.

The scoring system is as follows:

6 points per rushing/receiving TD

4 points for throwing a TD

1 point per 50 yards passing

1 point per 25 yards rushing/receiving

The rest is typical to scoring. There are no points per receptions.

Some my thoughts on draft day is to continue to draft RBs until the starting RBs are gone and pick up a QB earlier than I normally would. So I would probably go RB/RB/RB/QB/RB and then finally a WR and Im even thinking of drafting a defense and kicker earlier.

I figure if I get a great RB core, a great QB, and a good defense and kicker, the one WR I have to start will not really matter. I am looking for any advice as to how to play in this league.

id parlay the QB even further if it is only 4 pt TDs

sub in your WR there and judge the QB talent vs the rest of the RB pool from the non out

i'd personally wait on DST and K as they are never very predictable, nor is there a huge difference between rounds 6-9

take a DST high if you really want but K is a mistake high

in mine you can start up to 4 RBs and i have done this type of drafting as well, very good for consistent points

I agree with above on drafting your WR early on, and letting your QB wait a while.

My league has a similar scoring system, and although the QBs often outscore the WRs the difference between the top WRs and the rest is far greater than the difference between the top QBs and the rest.

I like your plan of stocking up on RBs though. That usually works pretty well for me.

How many teams in this league? The tenth most productive WR scored approx. the same avg. per game as the twentieth running back last year. If 12 teams then at some point #1 receivers will prove better value than #3 backs depending on how the rest of your league drafts. Also, it may help you to consider the number of games missed by players from the two positions once you get past the 15th to 20th ranked players.

It is a 12 team league. I will probably takes the advice given here and go with at least one good WR. Does everyone agree that I should start 3 RB and 1 WR pretty much every week?

The league I have been playing in for almost 10 years now uses a very similar starting lineup to what you mentioned, we start 1 QB, 1 RB, 1 WR, 1 PK, 1 DEF, and 1 Flex (RB, WR, or TE).

One thing I will note, our drafts go completely back assward of what most people do around here, and I would expect your league to do the same if they have been playing for awhile.

Expect the highest ranked QB's / WR's to get drafted a little sooner than the norm. Studs at each position become imperitive. Having a stud RB core is important, but not at the expense of a good WR and QB.

Personally, in my draft, I attempt to secure my starting 2 RB's quickly, but I will also quickly decide to pick up a Stud WR / QB if the RB's I personally don't like are gone.

Paying attention to what people need / want during the draft is extremely important as well, it can tell you if / when you need to jump on one of your vacant positions if you don't have a starter yet. Make sure you never over pay for a RB, WR, or QB, and always be ready to see a DRASTIC run on a position happen between your pics when you have little to do about it. Nothing sucks more than to see Peyton go right before you, you take a 2nd tiered RB, and then watch the next 8-10 teams gobble up the remaning 8-10 decent QB's. Having a starting QB like Chris Simms, Matt Hasselback, Aaron Brooks etc etc in this kinda league is devastating, and not the good kinda devastating.

I think that I'd probably try to stock up on RBs as well, but I would try to snag one of the top 7 WRs, as I think they are a step above all the other WRs. Still, you might want to start thinking best player available regardless of position starting round 5 or so. Wait on QB, D/ST, etc...

...so I guess, yes I agree with your strategy...

I appreciate that advice. Im gonna go RB/RB and then either a player like FWP,Chester Taylor in the third or maybe a Chris Chambers type WR to soldify that 1 WR spot. I'll have to keep my eye on when there is a run for QBs. I have a long wait after my 4th round pick so if there is a run on QBs after this pick and I dont already have one, I could be in some trouble as far as the QB position. Its just that the 1 point per 25 rushing/receiving and 1 point per 50 yards passing is not what Im used to. I'll have to focus more on total TDs.
