what is a sizzler?....

 

The sizzler is the one thing that can drop our carriers like a hot potato. - And we have no defense for it.

 

3 times the speed of sound, highly evasive and powerful as hell.

 

I know the Reagan got a sophisticated multi-level system that basically eliminated the Phalanx, but apparently, that's not enough either.

 

Scary shiit. All kinds of people would love to take out a carrier.

The U.S. Navy, after nearly six years of warnings from Pentagon testers, still lacks a plan for defending aircraft carriers against a supersonic Russian-built missile, according to current and former officials and Defense Department documents.

 

The missile, known in the West as the “Sizzler,” has been deployed by China and may be purchased by Iran. Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England has given the Navy until April 29 to explain how it will counter the missile, according to a Pentagon budget document.

 

The Defense Department’s weapons-testing office judges the threat so serious that its director, Charles McQueary, warned the Pentagon’s chief weapons-buyer in a memo that he would move to stall production of multibillion-dollar ship and missile programs until the issue was addressed.

 

“This is a carrier-destroying weapon,” said Orville Hanson, who evaluated weapons systems for 38 years with the Navy. “That’s its purpose.”

 

“Take out the carriers” and China “can walk into Taiwan,” he said. China bought the missiles in 2002 along with eight diesel submarines designed to fire it, according to Office of Naval Intelligence spokesman Robert Althage.

 

A Pentagon official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Russia also offered the missile to Iran, although there’s no evidence a sale has gone through. In Iranian hands, the Sizzler could challenge the ability of the U.S. Navy to keep open the Strait of Hormuz, through which an estimated 25 percent of the world’s oil traffic flows.

thank you....this weapon sounds like an amazing thing, maybe so amazing it's not exactly true? Whatever the truth is, any enemy attacking a US carrier is biting off a piece they will choke to death on....believe that. I've spent time on carriers, more than one....they are cities without distraction...warships that can, in tandum with the rest of the battle group, destroy large chunks of the planet if need be.

It sure has the Pentagon worried. Anybody comes up with a viable Flat-top killer and the whole landscape changes in a heartbeat.

 

On the other hand, Iran would have to have a farking death wish to hit one of our carriers. At that point, I'm pretty sure the ROE would go out the window.

to kill a carrier assumes a lot...the weapon is as advertised and not just bluff...that the platform for the weapon would ever get a chance to launch....that the enemy is ready to be utterly destroyed by sub counter attack. All kinds of stuff that makes any use of a "sizzler" equal to the use of a nuke bomb....end of the game scenario.

- Seems like enough quality sources - including the Pentagon have confirmed that one.

 

2)...that the platform for the weapon would ever get a chance to launch

- That's the key. It'd have to be one hell of a lucky shot. - But 9/11 was too..

 

 

3)that the enemy is ready to be utterly destroyed by sub counter attack.

- Enough bat-shiit crazies in the military & navy directly controlled by the Ayatollahs that this is a concern.

that too...while we love our grunt brothers and know they are true warriors...squids like a hot meal before we kill the enemy in mass numbers...that food in a bag stuff the soldiers must endure is uncivilized

As much bluster has been thrown around in this thread, the truth is - short of using nukes - that the Pentagon has repeatedly said that we'll need 4 carrier groups to accomplish an effective bombing campaign on Iran.

 

I posted a page a while ago that (more or less) shows the location/deployment of various carriers. Been watching that very carefully. When we see #3 and #4 wander into the region, Iran's butt best start puckering.

 

At what point do you start criticizing Bush and the administration for going into Iran? Or would this war be ok with you? It would be done with the same overwhelming support from the likes of Kerry, Hillary,Kennedy and 80 other Dems who have publicly stated that Iraq possessed and intended further proliferation of WMDs.

All of the actions taken in Iran would be on account of the intel received, is that enough for you this time? Cant wait for this flip flop.
