Strike help me out

Recommended Posts

After you responded to my last post in that one thread its clear you made me look like a fool and you know a whole lot more about it than i do. So what do you think of the new budget?

My take on it is similar to what i read in the oakland tribune. It said the republicans are safe in their district and weren't feeling as much heat to get something done. Democrats have more people in their districts who rely on state help and were feeling more heat. They cracked.

Its funny to see that representatives from my hometown area are power players. I never knew about it.

So what do you think of the budget? Good, bad, middle ground?

Moni,

The new budget isn't bad in the context of recent budgets in Cali. However, it relies on a bunch of accounting tricks to be balanced. They want to borrow 10 billion against future lottery revenue, an action which requires voter approval. You'll see a special election next year to vote on that aspect of the budget, along with the "rainy day" fund that's in the budget. If voters don't approve those measures the budget will end up having a huge deficit. The budget is decent in that it doesn't raise taxes and doesn't significantly raise spending. Had they used similar budgets the last few years the state wouldn't have been in the position it's in now. Unfortunately, the budget does nothing to deal with the structural issues that cause this budget impasse every year in California. You'll see the same fight happen again next year. While everyone involved is happy there is a budget, no one is very happy WITH the budget. As the Governor said,

This budget is an improvement of the earlier versions,” he told reporters in Sacramento on Friday. “But there’s nothing to really celebrate. As I said, great things were accomplished, but there are certain things that were not accomplished.

California is already projecting to be billions in the hole, and the fires aren't helping any. Expect more talk of tax/fee increases and the state will still be heading closer and closer to bankruptcy.
