Very early drafts?

Recommended Posts

I'm having all sorts of problems finding a day close to the start of the season where all the guys in my league can make it for the draft (for a redraft).

Trying earlier and earlier days, to find one that is good for everyone.

So I'm wondering, what's the earliest date you've ever had a draft? Is it crazy to have a draft 3 or 4 weeks before the start of the season?

Thanks!!

same here... we have always drafted the weekend before Thursday kickoff. This year, it seems that we have several owners (between 3 and 5) that will be out of town on the 2 weekends prior to season start. We are backing it way up this year.

There is some grumbling, but overall it is not that big of a deal. Everyone is assuming equal risk of injury.

The bigger picture is that we are all pretty good friends and have had only one owner change in the last 9 years. Draft is always one of the best days of the year and it wouldn't be near as good w/ 5 owners on the phone.

You make good points, the equal injury risk for everyone, and the better to all be there for an earlier date rather than half the guys being on the phone for a later date. I'll use those to sell the earlier date and see what happens...

My local league is doing the draft on August 16th, which is way, way early--last year we did it the Wednesday night before the Giants/Redskins game. This year, too many people are going to be out of town or getting into the thick of law school or business school to set aside a night much closer to the kickoff. Kinda sucks, but that's the unpleasant interference of real life for you.

We're having ours on the 14th but its a small league with big rosters so i dont think there is any problem with guys getting hurt. I think it also adds an element, where as you have to pick who you think will win the camp battles, and not who ultimately does. It adds a preseasonal element to the fantasy league, that actually makes it quite interesting. Do you take a guy like Westbrook with out knowing his full health situation, and if you do and you get good value, I mean kudos to you. I think the date of the draft is overrated, IMO.

I dont think it matters the date of the draft. Like someone said above. It's a fair playing field for all. However it does hurt for the people that pay close attention to the preseason. D Will had a great preseason last year. I know it's ONLY preseason...but I really wasnt targeting him to much till preseason...which essentially led me to draft him. Same goes for Slaton.
