kutulu 1,556 Posted July 16, 2010 Jake Shields has signed a contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship and plans to return to the welterweight division, the website of Shields' training camp reports... UFC has openly coveted Shields for several months. The promotion needs to find new competition for titleholder Georges St. Pierre, the No. 1 welterweight in the USA TODAY/SB Nation consensus rankings. Shields first opponent under his new contract will be "one of the UFC's top contenders," GracieFighter reports. The only UFC fighters in the consensus top-10 who haven't faced St. Pierre are No. 7 Martin Kampmann and No. 9 Paulo Thiago. St. Pierre has wins over five of the top six ranked UFC fighters. Shields currently is at No. 11 for welterweights, but that reflects the fact that he has been fighting as a middleweight for the past year -- beating the highly regarded Henderson in April vaulted Shields to No. 3 among 185-pounders. Had Shields stayed at 170 pounds in Strikeforce, he likely would be in the welterweight top five. Teammate Diaz is currently No. 5 on the consensus list, which distills rankings from several websites and MMA experts. ~usatoday.com
