Keeper rules can be as simple or as complex as you want them to be. You need to consider your league members. How casual or hardcore are they? You also need to consider your host site. Different hosts allow for different levels of customization for keepers and draft options.

If you are looking for examples, here is how my league handles keepers:

Teams have the option of keeping zero, one or two keepers.

Keeper costs:

  • 1st Year - Non-Keeper - Players may be drafted and used for one season and then released/not selected as keeper.
  • 2nd Year - Draft Based Keepers - Players may be drafted and kept for an additional season (2 years total). Cost = Round drafted the previous year minus 2. E.g. RB E.Lacy was drafted in round 5 last season. He can be kept as a 3rd round pick this year. (and was)
  • 3rd Year - Performance Based Keepers - Players may be drafted, kept for an additional year, then kept for another additional year (3 years total). The cost will be a 1st, 2nd or 3rd round depending on the players previous year's performance. If they finished top 1-3 at their position then they will cost a 1st. Top 4-10 = 2nd. Top 11+ = 3rd.
  • 4th Year - Cannot be kept - No player may be kept for a 4th season in a row. They must be returned to the draft pool.

2nd year - draft based keepers - allows for owners to keep gems that they found the previous year at very good values. Some examples from my league this year included: RB A.Ellington for a 14th, QB N.Foles 14th, WR C.Patterson 14th, RB G.Bernard 6th, WR A.Jeffery 11th, WR K.Allen 14th and RB L.Bell 8th.

3rd year - Performance Based Keepers - Owners often must now pay a higher price to keep the same player tied up even longer. With the cost being a 1st, 2nd or 3rd. We added this rule when QB M.Vick broke out a few years back. We did not think it was good for league balance for an owner to be able to keep him for a 14th, then a 12th, then a 10th, etc. Obviously looking back his reign did not last long enough to really warrant the rule change, but we still liked the idea behind it. This made it "too expensive" for owners to keep certain players. Players that got thrown back in this year: WR A.J.Green (1st), WR A.Brown (2nd), TE J.Graham (1st), RB C.J.Spiller (3rd), RB D.Martin (3rd).

4th Year - Cannot be Kept - For many of us, the draft is one of the highlights of the season. We did not want all the studs to be locked up indefinitely. So this ensures that there will always be a few studs available each year. This forced RB M.Forte, RB M.Lynch, QB A.Rodgers and QB D.Brees back into the pool this year.

We also have a different way of determining draft order, which also plays into possible keeper selections.

Owners are allowed to choose their draft slot. The order of choice was determined during last year's playoffs. (This gives owners who are knocked out something to still play for.)

  • Choice 1 & 2 belong to the Toilet Bowl Champion and Finalist
  • Choice 3-10 are based on total playoff points scored (most points scored = #3)
  • Choice 11 & 12 belong to the playoff finalist and champion

This forces owners to put more thought into both draft slot choice and keeper selections. E.g. WR C.Johnson may not have as much value as a 1.01 keeper as he would a 1.12.

Ours is pretty simple. $250 cap. Draft 15-20 players and can keep up to 3.

If drafted for $1 - $20 the price goes up $5 the following year.

$21-35 it goes up $10

$35+ it goes up $15
