Barack Obama is the President of the United States, and the movie The Lion King (3D) is at the top of the box office. David Cameron is the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. On television, people are watching popular shows such as "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation", "One Tree Hill", "Skins", and "Mad Men".

Video rental stores such as Blockbuster are continuing to close their doors at the moment. Sadly, it seems as though they will be unable to compete with online streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu. People are using pre-made comics called "Rage Comics" to share funny and relatable experiences. It's 2011, so the music charts are being dominated by artists such as Adele, Maroon 5, LMFAO, Katy Perry, Rihanna and Bruno Mars.

There is a strange new fad called "planking", which involves a person lying face down in an unusual location. An Advice Animal meme called "Good Guy Greg" is beginning to take off in popularity. Meanwhile, in the Middle East, protests in Syria have snowballed, and a civil war has started. Armed militias are now beginning to spring up across the country.

The catchphrase "We are the 99%" is being used to spread awareness about wealth inequality in the United States. People are also posting photographs of themselves holding placards that describe their financial situation. An advertisement video for American taxidermist Chuck Testa has gone viral and Internet users are repeating the catchphrase "Nope! Chuck Testa!" The 2011 Rugby World Cup is taking place in New Zealand at the moment.

A new app called "Snapchat" has just been released. American pop duo LMFAO have released a new song called "Sexy and I Know It". The Occupy Wall Street movement is receiving widespread media attention.

Rihanna and Calvin Harris have just released the song "We Found Love". A civil war is raging on in Libya. Libyan rebels, with the support of NATO, are now taking over some of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's final strongholds. In soccer, Manchester City player Carlos Tevez has recently caused controversy by refusing to come on as a substitute against Bayern Munich.

If you were to travel back to this day, notable figures such as Steve Jobs, Joe Frazier, Heavy D, and Gary Speed would all still be alive. People are playing video games such as "Civilization V", "Homefront", "Terraria", and "Gears of War 3". Kids and teenagers are watching TV shows such as "One Tree Hill", "Johnny Test", "WordGirl", and "Victorious".
