Various New User Questions

I just spent a while answering eight questions from a new user (welcome!) and thought some or all of this might be helpful to others...

Hello Mike,

I am new to FFT and the Draft Buddy. My league is serpentine draft style 12 team, 16 player draft, Half PPR league

We use the fleaflicker.com league settings.

My league roster requirements are:

1 QB

1 RB

2 WR

1 TE

1WR/TE

1 RB/WR/TE

1 QB/RB/WR/TE

1 K

1 Def

What is your recommendation for setting up my league based on the following options. My issue is how to configure the Draft Buddy using the O-Flex option (or not) given my league structure.

Other questions:

  1. Keepers cost a draft pick? What does that mean? In our league, for example I am keeping Bo Nix in Round 9, thus I would not pick in Round 9.
  2. Combine WR/TE? How would I use this?
  3. Do you import from Fleaflicker.com or Sportsline.com
  4. Do you offer in-season roster recommendations or Waiver wire pick up options?
  5. Do you have in-season trade analysis
  6. Does the app allow for auto Mock drafting or I will have to draft each player manually?  If that is the case, how do I reset a draft to the beginning?
  7. I have already entered my keepers, but I realized that I need to change a setting.  Do I have to manually re-enter my keepers again?  Is there another way to preserve this?

Thank you in advance. My league draft is Monday, September 1.

Thank you.

Glad to have you with us this year! Interesting you use Fleaflicker. I don't play there but it looks like a good site, and I know it's been around for a long time. I don't hear from many people who use it though. Let me get to your questions here as best I can...

1. Sounds like your league uses "keepers cost a draft pick" - meaning you give up a draft pick to keep a player. Some leagues just have 1, 2, 3 keepers with no draft pick cost. So let me be honest with you about this. I used to tell people in keeper leagues like yours to get their draft report tab set up and input the players directly on the draft report tab beside the pick given up by each team. This works and is pretty straight forward. On the rules tab set teams, roster spots and draft rounds (along with other settings and scoring) and on the action tab click Compile Cheatsheets. Now your draft report tab should have the proper number of teams, rounds, etc. Input a player next to the pick by selecting the position, and then the player.

However, people always wondered why they don't use the keepers tab in this case. I just thought it was easier. If you set keepers on the rules tab and change "keepers cost a draft pick" to yes, input other settings and hit Compile, then a keepers tab will appear. On that you can input the keepers for each team, and there should be a third yellow highlighted column for each team where you can select the draft pick given up (9th for Nix, for you). This will copy the player to that pick on the draft report tab... so you end up same as the first method above.

Note, after your keepers and draft report tab are set properly, go to the action tab and there are two reset options above the Compile Cheatsheets button. Turn those to off so you don't lose your keepers if you Compile again.

2. This does not seem to apply to you. Some leagues don't have a separate TE position.

3. Sorry, no. Do you do your live draft on Fleaflicker? And by Sportsline you mean CBS, correct?

4. Draft Buddy is simply a draft tool, so we don't update it after the season starts. There really is nothing in it that would be very useful to you at that point. However, FF Today has weekly rankings, articles, etc., all free, to help you manage your team in-season. So we've got you covered at no extra cost.

5. Same as 4, to a degree, using weekly rankings and I think FF Today has rest-of-season rankings. Possibly articles with trade advice. Or, feel free to ask me or any other other content guys you follow. Most are usually pretty good about giving advice and answering questions.

6. Sorry, that isn't a feature in Draft Buddy, so you could input picks manually. Couple ways to reset. Well first, what I would suggest is after you get your keepers input, save it and make a second copy of the file for mock/testing. To do that, use File > Save As.. > Macro-Enabled Workbook and change the filename. Now you have two. This is how you would create another copy for a second league, too.

To "simply" remove players off the draft report tab (and then update other tabs), highlight just the yellow highlighted cells on the draft report tab - position, player - for the picks you want to remove and click the Delete button on your computer. It clears them, and rolls back the draft.

To reset Draft Buddy completely, change those reset options I mentioned earlier to yes, and Compile Cheatsheets. This will wipe out your keepers though, which is why a second copy of the file is a good idea.

7. Don't have to reset the keepers. I think we've covered this with the reset options. Generally when you change rules/scoring/options/projections, then you do want to hit Compile Cheatsheets to update the rankings.

Okay, realized half way through didn't do the main question about positions. Here is what I suggest:

- since it is a superflex league, set QB starters to 2 ... everyone is going to want to use a QB for that QB/RB/WR/TE position anyway
- to cover the WR/TE flex spot, lets just add one to WR ... you already have a set TE position, and by the time we are down to 12 TE (12-team league), WR will be a better option for that WR/TE spot for all teams
- since that solves the SF and WR/TE flex spots, we are left with 1 O-Flex for the RB/WR/TE

So here is what I've got for you (recommended, but feel free to alter the backups if you like):

Last thing: If you hit Compile Cheatsheets and find the overall rankings are not pushing the QB up high enough based on your history with this league, then go to the options tab, change the Overall Ranking Method to "Median Player Drafted" (which tends to work better for 2-QB/SF leagues) and hit Compile again, see if that looks better. Will only impact the overall rankings.

Good luck at the draft!
