Cultural existential threat: Marxism and Moral Relativism
MLCKAA replied to jerryskids's topic in The Geek Club
Thanks for posting. Judeo Christian morality was the foundation of the US for a long time and some would say it still is or that it still should be. Judeo Christian beliefs reject moral relativism. Most of my life, I accepted that. I have come to believe that some things are relative and I can’t accept a calcified enforcement of JC morality across the board. In John Jesus is quoted as saying that if he had not come and talked to Man about God, and shown them miracles, then their lives would not be sinful. But because he came and spoke to them and showed them miracles, they have no excuse for not believing and therefore are guilty of sin. Alas, that was 2,000 years ago. I do not mean to be flippant when I say that you and I have only a 2k year old text for reference. He did not talk to me or show me miracles. I was not shown that same grace. And this is where my problem with strict morality begins. If God created us with this FREE WILL that my fellow Christians love to mention, then he would foresee that we (alive today) would need the same grace as what was shown to people in biblical times. He would foresee that we would question, doubt and adapt morality. I believe we were created and, because of that, I must believe that he foresaw the evolution of morality 2k years post-gospel and has chosen not to prevent it. -
I do not believe you can quantify a number of deaths caused by people discouraging others from getting the vaccine.

My team? I acknowledged that it happened. You’re overreacting toward me. I don’t post much, but I post enough that it should be known where my politics are. But, ehhhhh, good for you letting off some steam there.
-
Dude, I acknowledged that it happened. I didn’t claim there was nothing to see. Just expressing my surprise that some people are still really fired up about it. And it wasn’t a dis, as I said. You do you, brother. Party on.
-
It is all theoretical. How and why are too often conflated.
-
It surprises me that people are still really fired up about this. To me, this issue is over as we’ve moved to a new phase of dealing with coronavirus. I’m not saying the shaming and condescension didn’t happen and I’m not dissing @Maximum Overkill and others for talking about it. I’m just surprised that anyone is still worked up about it.

Basketball fans deserve a better pro league than the NBA. Youth, HS, college— all are good to watch. The NBA is a scam. I yearn for an upstart competitor.

This looks like it will be one of the worst movies of all time.

You say you don’t care if other countries are diverse, but then say you want other countries to see us as an example of how things should be. By your standards, we should be racially and ethnically diverse. By your other standard, therefore, other countries should also be racially and ethnically diverse. -
I get enough tornado action at work. Five total losses in the last 6 weeks

There seems to be this set of actors who I find I always enjoy in every movie role. Paul Rudd, Ryan Gosling, Jon Hamm, Jason Bateman, Ryan Reynolds, DiCaprio, Bale, Depp.

Good call on Dafoe.

In the fridge they last a few days, but in the freezer it’s indefinite. -

Would kill 1,000 puppies before a baby. But, that’s just me. -

Good thread. I’m going with one that will be unpopular: Deniro

Would you rather be left in the woods alone with a bear or a woman?
MLCKAA replied to cmh6476's topic in The Geek Club
Probably the bear. If the woman were lobotomized, then *maybe* the woman, but probably still the bear. -

Spot-on comment about “overweight” by BMI standards! Started losing weight last July when I began paying attention to cholesterol. When I’d dropped about 20 pounds I found myself in the overweight category, and I didn’t disagree. The ridiculous part was that based on the BMI chart, I was gonna need to get my 6 ft self all the way down to 178# to get to “normal.” 178 on me would look like post-chemo. -
My wife (34C) has a terminal illness of an autoimmune variety. When she was first diagnosed in 2013 I always thought “terminal” meant “Ya dyin’ next week” but they use it to refer to any illness that will measurably shorten your life expectancy. So, she’s been in remission since 2014 and has done great. But she’s no longer in remission as of today. I’ve known all this time that it would happen and that we’d have to face hospitalization and treatment again, but I’ve been lying to myself about it. Feeling devastated.

Thanks for the questions! The drug is fda approved. When she was diagnosed 2013 it had just been approved shortly before. Her hematologist was involved in trials and he and his colleagues had theories about alternative uses for it. Well, not really alternative uses but non-label ways of dosing it to generate slightly different results. It’s fascinating stuff. The beauty of having a university research hospital 20 minutes away! RE: only responding once… When she was diagnosed, they gave her steroids (Prednisone). That worked. 14 days later, it wasn’t working anymore. Numbers fell. So, they gave her steroids again and nothing happened. Then they gave her immune globulin. Numbers jumped up. 3 days later they fell back. Gave her the IG again, nothing happened. Current treatment seems to be working a second time. Doctor told us he’s engaged in a long term study on it. He believes that for some patients, the right dosage will disable the immune system’s destruction response. He’s studying to determine what variables exist in the patients who respond to it that way. I try to find just the right level of ambiguity on here because some of us are such utter dikkholes. I realize I’ve said enough that the properly motivated person could figure out what she has and what she’s taking, but I’m vague about those details deliberately.

It feels good mostly because the high net is based on virtually no liabilities and because I know it means retirement is a certainty at a good age. Mostly, though, this is assets not a bunch of liquid COH. Within 5 years we’ll have huge decisions to make as my wife’s SARs roll in (cash) and they sell the ESOP, which will be just enormous for her. And me.

I hear this and look at my own life. None of my friends or family members who are close to my age have died. But I do think about it and understand it’s bound to happen in my life soon enough. The father of my son’s teammate dropped dead from heart attack a year ago at only 44. Yikes.
