He’s actually a poor writer. He has no sense of pacing, weak on character development and clubs the reader over the head with terrible efforts at foreshadowing. He’s done nothing experimental and his books are totally formulaic.
I was a young reader and picked up my first King novel at age 12 because my mother believed he was so awesome. I read 5 of his books by age 18. His collection of short stories under the pen name Bachman was probably his best and he should have stuck with short stories. The best novel he produced was The Talisman, which was co-authored by Peter Straub. I consider King a hack who writes pablum pulp.
