I keep hearing that funding to USAID is only 1% of the federal budget. That, IMO, is a distraction. It matters not what percentage of our budget it is. The important questions are: is there fraud happening? Is there misappropriation? Are the needs of recipients being weighed against the needs of taxpayers? Those are the priority questions. Having said that, we need more than inflammatory statements and hyperbole here. Expose the fraud and misappropriation and justify the funding cuts. Why does the US need to give $6B over the last decade to South Africa? Is SA not a sovereign country? Is it just to stymie SA’s friendliness with China? If so, wake up and realize it is not working.

What catches my attention is the reaction that goes kinda like this “Um, OMG, so we’re an org that gets this funding and now, due to the freeze, we don’t know if we’re gonna operate tomorrow.” As if they don’t have an annual budget and they just receive an EFT every day for their operating capital? If you’re an organization that will fold with 1 day of uncertainty about your future funding, then you might be telling me that you belong on the hitlist.

I guess we disagree whether or not it matters. Everyone wants to avoid paying taxes. No one is volunteering to pay taxes. I would utilize loopholes as long as it wasn’t something illegal. To me it matters whether he did something criminal or merely savvy.

I think she, and others making similar statements, fail to ever consider the not-so- rich investors. The people just contributing to a Roth or 401(k). That’s the majority of investors.
