I hear what you’re saying. To me, your perspective is valid and I see your point.

The tariffs don’t almost guarantee economic doom and reversing them would not almost guarantee economic prosperity. You’re smart, so you know this— the unforeseeable variables of the global socioeconomic fabric and the influence of future technological advances make it impossible to do anything better than predictive modeling. And predictive modeling has been slapped in the face by unforeseeable variables time and again.

Really? Is this hyperbole? This sounds like tariffs are your #1 political issue. In exchange for no tariffs you’d accept the current president remaining in office for 20 years. This has to mean tariffs are your overall top issue, which makes you the only person I have ever “met” with this particular set of priorities.

I’m not exactly on the fence with this; I can generally support it. However, there’s a difference between spending a bunch of SNAP money on junk food and simply eating things that are part of American diet zeitgeist. For example, getting chips or a bag of Oreos is simply living. I would hope we’re not going to tell people on food stamps that they can’t have any comfort foods. On the other hand, a whole lot of SNAP dollars are spent at the gas station. Regarding whether or not canned, boxed and frozen meals are actually healthy, I understand the argument that they’re high sodium, high calorie and often low quality. But that’s not the only variable to consider. Having those things can foster family togetherness if you believe in the importance of family dinner, which I do. They’re also time-saving, which could be important to many of the families on SNAP.

Thank you. I’ve found, though, that non-partisan commentary is usually ignored here. Most posters here want to argue with the others who disagree with them. And, so, the effort to post in the political threads is seldom worthwhile for me.

We simply disagree about the main cause, but the here is no denying that the CIA interfered in the governments of a couple of central and south American countries. It is debatable how much that still affects them today. I wouldn’t be able to speak to that. Much longer ago the Spanish meddled far more in those regions and I think it is arguable that those people never have fully recovered from the Spanish.

You said previously that climate change is the #1 reason for illegal immigration. Is that the “conditions in Latin America” that you’re referring to? I deliberately avoid the political threads here so it is very possible I have missed it, but when have you argued that addressing the conditions in LA are the key to dealing with illegal immigration? To my knowledge, I’m the only poster here who has ever made that argument, though I’m not talking about climate change when I say that.

And focused on the wrong thing. Two days ago JD Vance gave a speech at the Paris AI Summit. In a nutshell, he said we need to take our collective foot off the brakes vis a vis AI regulation. He also said, disingenuously I believe, that automation will create jobs. I think this is malarkey. Be very thoughtful about the field of study you encourage your son or daughter to pursue. AI is coming for most. I harbor no optimism for the current generation of high school students.

Shoot, I wish I’d go bald. I have a full head of hair and no sign of that changing. I go with a very low cut and get it done regularly just so that I have little to maintain. What I would really like to talk about is graying. The hair on the scalp has only gone a little but the mtherfcking beard is PURE WHITE. Not gray…white.
