Apparently a lot of people. Minneapolis sold a record 680,000 hotel rooms during summer 2024, according to Meet Minneapolis, setting post-pandemic highs for summer occupancy, room demand and room revenue. The occupancy rate last August was over 70% — the highest since October 2019. I go there for work a few times a year. Lots of big businesses HQ there. Great food town.

This isn’t hard. The people who did this fraud are scumbags. Somalis (or whoever) who are working, going to school, paying taxes, raising kids, etc are normal people.

This law did that outside of this age difference. If people don’t agree with that distinction that’s fine. That is not some bullshit that lawmakers are refusing to pass laws and are instead protecting sex traffickers and that Democrats are in some cabal to steal children’s blood or whatever.

I assume it would be for say a 19 year old having sex with an 17 year old girl since that language was added about the age difference.. The poster I responded to seemed to be implying that law makers were somehow encouraging sex trafficking in some underhanded manner.

This is not correct. Here’s the law that was passed: AB 379 (2025): Initially, this bill aimed to make soliciting sex from 16- and 17-year-olds a felony, aligning penalties with those for younger minors. However, concerns about over-criminalization led to the removal of this provision. Following public backlash and pressure from Governor Newsom, lawmakers reached a compromise: felony charges would apply if the offender is at least three years older than the minor, with added safeguards to prevent misuse.

I’m not sure why they are saying it would boost tourism (are they spending that money on some tourism marketing plan or something) but the extra 6 bucks a night or so for a hotel I doubt is changing people’s vacation plans.
