IMO The current perfect setup for suburb or city living in your typical household is one gas car suited to whatever you do. SUV for if you ski, bike, camp, drag kids around town, etc and an EV for commuting to work (if both work longest drive take the EV), running errands, grocery store, etc. The EV can be used in most situations but having that gas car around is still nice for the long trips.
