All of this is true. But there’s actually more as well. American honor is at stake. When Ukraine was liberated from the Soviet Union they had nuclear weapons. We, the United States, convinced them to give them up in the name of nuclear disarmament. They were concerned naturally that they might be invaded in the future and we promised them that if that ever happened we would come to their aid. Every President since Clinton reiterated this pledge including Trump during his first term (though Trump infamously attempted to blackmail Ukraine- the reason for his first impeachment.) In any event we pledged to help Ukraine. It’s another reason we care about it. Not that honor will mean anything to the guy you replied to.

Exactly. This same dude predicted Ukraine would fall in a few weeks. He and the rest of these idiots continue, against all evidence, to assume Russia is invincible. Russia has lost a million men! And then they act like the only alternative to giving up is to invade ourselves. Continue to support Ukraine. Put heavy sanctions on Russia. Continue to isolate Putin. Eventually, sooner rather than later, he will come to the table willing to make a real deal. What’s happening now is terrible, stupid, unnecessary.

One of the very few good things about Trump is his ability to pivot 180 degrees without any apparent loss of face or embarrassment. If Zelenskyy says no to this latest travesty of a deal, Trump can still reverse himself and lay down sanctions on Russia. If he does I will support him. I doubt he will but there’s always hope.

In return Russia will ceasefire and promise not to invade the rest of Ukraine (Putin has broken previous promises.) Zelenskyy must resign with a new election (which Russia will no doubt heavily influence in an attempt to get a pro-Putin flunky) and no NATO membership for Ukraine. if this sounds familiar it’s because Russia has been making the same demands for over a year. They are making NO concessions. And their demand goes way beyond keeping the land that Horse’s a$$ claims they will never give up, they also get to take land they never conquered. And Trump is in favor of this and is going to pressure Zelenskyy to accept with the threat of cutting off support. This isn’t a peace deal. It’s a surrender. But it won’t surprise me if many of you favor it. Surrender is what you guys have always wanted. If you ever need to give up your day jobs there are plenty of positions open for you in the French army.

It’s amazing how many things you can get wrong in just a couple of posts. First, back to your earlier post. Trump has been calling for a ceasefire for months. Twice he has given deadlines and promised sanctions. Only two days ago he threatened to walk away from the conference if a ceasefire wasn’t agreed to and threatened dire consequences. Now he says a ceasefire isn’t needed. That’s not negotiating. That’s not getting concessions. If you think it is, then you’re a moron (which I already knew). Second yes Ukraine could and will get some of this land back, if not most of it. Thats because most of the people living there regard themselves as Ukrainians and not Russians. It will cost Russia billions to govern the Donbas which will be hostile. If we gave Ukraine our full support and placed the sanctions on Russia that Trump has promised, Ukraine would get some of that land back even now. Your assertion that they will never get it back is asinine and uninformed. Third- why do I waste my time? Go back to your fake hot wife and your non-existent millions. This is a grownup discussion.

The number of actual folks willing to have serious discussions in this forum is steadily dwindling.

See the thing is, a security guarantee goes way beyond Putin (and Trump and Zelenskyy for that matter.) Russia is ALWAYS going to want Ukraine. They always have. 50 years from now this is going to be an issue. Like China and Taiwan, like the two Koreas, it’s never going away. Unlike many of you I do think we need to be involved. But not a military guarantee. I just don’t think we can.

Are you willing to give a security guarantee to Ukraine? I know I sound like an isolationist here but I kind of don’t. Giving them aid is one thing. A security guarantee, the equivalent of NATO, that’s something else. Neither Biden nor Obama was willing to do that for good reason.

Apparently to you real life means giving in to a murderous dictator without getting anything in return. You’re right I would suck at that. Sounds like it might be right up your alley though.

And we don’t know this either. Russia has lost a million men and this war is killing their economy. If they were a free country there would be thousands of protests there- this is their Vietnam War. If we were to fully support Ukraine AND sanction Russia (as Trump has threatened but never done) I believe it might force them to withdraw. At the very least it would force Putin to come to the table with a much better offer. But now we’ll never know.

Are you sure? I’m not. There is a reason, in the nuclear age, that we don’t put too many of these guarantees down on paper. For example we have never officially guaranteed Taiwan, because if we did it would bring us closer to nuclear war. Do you want to fight a nuclear war over the remainder of Ukraine? I’m no isolationist but I don’t.

Like the Czechs he may be forced into it. Depends on the rest of Europe. But it’s a surrender, IMO.

Yeah two problems with that: first, Trump doesn’t have the ability to offer a long term security guarantee. That would require an act of Congress. And it’s kind of a big deal. It doesn’t mean we aid Ukraine as we’re doing now- it means we go to war if Russia attacks again. I’m as big a supporter of Ukraine as anyone here but I don’t know if I want to do this. The second problem is for Ukraine and it’s based on history: in 1938 at Munich England offered to have Czechoslovakia give up the Sudetenland in return for a security guarantee, by England, of the rest of Czechoslovakia. Hitler agreed knowing the guarantee was worthless. Czechoslovakia agreed; what choice did they have? Sure enough few months later Germany occupied the rest of Czech and England did nothing. Zelenskyy knows this history very well. Why should he trust us to keep our word?
