Trump cutting funding to South Africa
The Real timschochet replied to squistion's topic in The Geek Club
If you assert something that is opposite of what the news is reporting, it’s up to you to prove the news is wrong. -
Neither of your points go to your earlier statement that waving flags of another country demonstrate that the wavers are not American.

As I suspected the details of this bill have not been represented correctly in this thread: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cvg9w4n6gp5o The government can only seize land “if the property is not being used, there has been no effort to develop it and make money from it, or it poses a risk to people.” Further it can’t be done unless the government has tried and failed to reach an agreement with the owner. Given the inequities of land ownership in South Africa how is this unreasonable? That doesn’t mean I’m necessarily for this law, but the idea being spread around of white farmers being thrown off their land as an act of revenge seems like total nonsense spread by the usual subjects here (I.E. white supremacist liars like @Cdub100) -
Interesting. So when on St Patrick’s Day Irish flags are waved, those folks aren’t American either?

I always love to be psychoanalyzed. But the answer is much simpler: I’m not giving it back because it was stolen fair and square and the people it was stolen from are all dead. I don’t believe in reparations unless you were alive to be wronged. The only reason I wrote that was to contradict @Strike’s absurd absolutism about land ownership. There is nothing absolute about this subject. -

In any event I’ve come to believe that with Trump none of his announcements actually come true until they actually come true. Case in point the tariffs. So probably there will be some meeting between South Africa’s President and Trump, and some sort of promise or bribe will be made, and the money will go through. -
Reminds me of Anthony Burns: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Burns The sanctuary movement are today’s version of abolitionists.

I’m living on land that was seized from the Mexican government without compensation. -

1. No the answer is yes. I offered an example. There are others. 2. @squistion offered an analogy. You pointed out why that analogy is flawed. I tend to agree with your rebuttal but that doesn’t make him a liar. You do that a lot and it’s warped thinking IMO. -
The Lakers? Wrong sport but imagine him defending in the paint!

1. Usually not but there are extreme examples where it can be justified. After the Civil War General Grant seized Confederate slaveholder’s land and distributed it to former slaves: “40 acres and a mule”- this was later rescinded but at the time it was a just decision. I don’t know if this current law is a just decision, doesn’t sound like it according to what you and others are saying but I’d like to see the details. Do you have them? 2. I don’t necessarily agree with @squistion about Trump’s motivation and I said so. I also don’t agree with the presumed liberal stereotyping of all white Sourh Africans as racist and wanting to bring back Apartheid, and I wrote that as well. Not sure what else you’re referring to. -

I thought Trump sent American troops down to the border and that border encounters were already way down. So what are you expecting to happen? -

Yes. This is all a show, hopefully. Let’s see what happens with Canada. -

I didn’t predict a win, I predicted some performative meaningless action and he would call it a win and you would cheer him on. Case in point: last week Trump called the Mexican national police corrupt thugs who help the cartels smuggle fentanyl and criminals across our border. Now 10,000 of these “corrupt thugs” are coming to our border and suddenly that’s a victory and Trump calls off the tariffs? You’ve been suckered again. -

I’m talking about the history of South Africa, not Africa the continent in general. Based on your post here you might want to read up on it. -

Not completely. Trump is sympathetic to any presentation of white people as victims. He always has been. -

But we need to be cautious of stereotyping. Liberals in this country, in reaction to this, are going to paint Musk and white South Africans as all racist and desiring to return to Apartheid. Trump and his supporters are going to paint the black South African government as all savage and attempting to steal land that doesn’t belong to them. Neither stereotype is true; stereotypes never are. -

This is a very complicated issue and you need to go back even before apartheid to get a hold on it. But the basics are that when the Dutch and British settlers arrived in South Africa they took most of the land by force from the native populations, just as we did here in America. The difference is the natives there didn’t die off from disease. Imagine if here in the USA our population was 10% descendant from immigrant and 90% Native American, and yet we (the descendants from immigrants) owned 90% of the land. That would be a mess. While I kind of know the history and the general problems that South Africa faces I don’t know the details of this act in question or how it will be used. There has probably got to be some land redistribution in that country, but on the other hand families (mostly white) who have owned land for centuries and developed industries that benefit all need to be fairly treated. So again this is very complicated. I don’t know if Trump’s move helps or hurts the situation. I suspect that it hurts it, and I’m suspicious of his motivations. -

Good morning. Excellent news as Mexico makes deal to avoid tariffs for one month by adding 10,000 national guard to the border. Performative? Really make a difference? Simply boost Trump’s ego? I don’t know and I don’t care. For now the tariffs are avoided and that’s a good thing, Now Canada can maybe do the same. They have 24 hours to find a way to kiss Trump’s a$$ before their tariffs are enacted. Whatever works. -
Well you’re not talking about me, lol. I don’t live behind any gates. And I do deal with undocumented people every day. Also I really do care about anyone who was a victim of a crime, no matter who committed it. All undocumented people who commit violent crimes should be rounded up and kicked out of the country immediately. I just think it’s unfair to persecute the rest, that’s all.
