US Federal Government Shutdown Thread
The Real timschochet replied to squistion's topic in The Geek Club
Such an annoying comment- hey look at me! I think this shutdown is pretty stupid, but the idea that anyone who voted against the resolution is unprincipled is pretty damn insulting. No surprise you love him for suggesting it. -

Can you provide direct quotes of above? I’d be very surprised if the ADL actually wrote that about Antifa. -

Obviously many hospitals would be less in financial trouble or debt if they didn’t have to pay for medical care for undocumented people. But there’s only two ways to do that: either you refuse to pay for them, which creates public health risks, or you deport them all, which not only costs hundreds of millions but would also drive prices way up because we have nobody else to perform the labor they do at the same price point (that’s already happening.) Either way the cost isn’t worth the result. The best solution is therefore to keep paying for their healthcare. -

The public is not with Trump. All the polls show that. Be of good cheer. And patient. We have to wait until the elections next year. In the meantime allow Trump to overreach with all of this crap. Cutting off healthcare, all the ICE crap, the tariffs, sending military to cities, prosecuting his enemies, all of it. Prices continue to rise, a lot of people will be hurt and I hate to see that, but what can we do? We’re powerless to stop any of this until the elections. This shutdown is a distraction and will fail for sure. -
Why are emphasizing the middle name here?

Starbucks demands a clause in their leases in which they can shut down at any time with no reason given and no financial obligation to the landlord. I have known a few landlords who balked at this and wouldn’t sign leases with them- too much risk. But most landlords sign anyhow- after all it’s Starbucks and they’re an “A” tenant and increase the value of your center. Until they decide, at any time, to bail…

Democrats will lose this battle because when shutdowns occur the public ALWAYS blames the side that makes demands. Not almost always. Always. This isn’t rocket science either. -

Agree with this but shutting down the government to try to achieve this is a loser. When has it ever worked? -

I don’t. I want them to have access to minimal healthcare. Otherwise they are a public health risk. It’s not rocket science and it’s not disgusting either. I don’t want to deport them because I believe that they are overall a net economic benefit (and a cultural benefit but that’s a different issue) and I don’t want them spreading diseases. So they need to have minimal healthcare. Pretty simple. -

Personally I absolutely am in favor of giving undocumented immigrants access to free healthcare. But Democrats are not. -

Damn I like him already. Actually I don’t. But apparently a lot of kids do. My daughter tells me he’s very popular in her elementary school. -
Democrats in the wrong fight- don’t shut down the government
The Real timschochet posted a topic in The Geek Club
The Democrats continue to be such idiots. So politically inept. I have predicted over and over that there will be blue wave in 2026 but the Dems could also blow it. They’re so bad at this. The latest is this political shutdown. The Dems are absolutely right from their perspective that the Republican budget is horrendous. Trump refuses to negotiate. Trump says if they go through with the shutdown he’ll start firing people left and right. The Democrat base is demanding that they better not give in an inch. The public won’t care about the issues involved. As always they will blame the party that instigated the shutdown. They will blame the Dems. Part of this is because the Democrats are led by Chuck Schumer and Hakan Jeffries who are, let’s be honest, wussies. They look weak and they are weak. The most likely result is 3 weeks of shutdown and the Dems will cave. And look worse than before. This is not the battle you want. Dems should agree to the budget and look towards 2026. -

It doesn’t affect me personally. I’m not poor. I care about people who are less fortunate than me. It’s called empathy. -

Democrats in the wrong fight- don’t shut down the government
The Real timschochet replied to The Real timschochet's topic in The Geek Club
The Democrats are essentially leaderless and will be until they nominate a new candidate for President sometime in early 2028. Until then, the two closest we have to leaders is Schumer and Hakim Jeffries. Which is like currently having Jake Browning and Carson Wentz as your quarterbacks. It’s not preferred. -

If you’re referring to me I haven’t weighed in. I don’t know the specifics about this gentleman, I don’t know his history or what he’s done wrong with regard to crime. I think you know that, as a general rule, I don’t think ICE should be detaining and deporting anyone who is not a violent criminal, regardless of their legal status. I think it’s morally wrong and hurts our nation to pursue that. Violent criminals are fair game. -

I like her for her snappy comments about Trump. She’s got spunk, and unlike Lou Grant, I like spunk. I enjoy listening to her. But she’ll never be the leader of the Democrats and I wouldn’t want that. Her political positions are too leftist for me. -
A Massachusetts city was named among the best places to live on the East Coast
The Real timschochet replied to edjr's topic in The Geek Club
Of course people will point out that South Carolina isn’t a blue state. But I’m told, though I’ve never been there, that Charleston is a diverse, woke paradise in the heart of redness all around it. I very much want to visit. -

Blue states are the best places to live. California, Mass, New York- there’s a reason why it’s so expensive to live there. -

So @Gepetto that is my argument. You can dismiss it as so many people here do by simply mocking any source as “liberal” or “leftist”, but I think knowledgeable folks realize the CBO is neither. Or you can make Mike Johnson’s argument: that the states that lose the federal money will simply take over the cost of this funding- but there is no evidence that this is the case. Or you can make the @Horseman’s argument: that so long as wealthy people are getting more tax breaks, who the Fock cares what poor people lose? Or you can decide that this was a bad bill and the correct response is to oppose it and oppose those politicians who supported it. Entirely up to you. -

Here is the main point from the above summary which backs up my claim that the “Big Ugly Bill is going to hurt a lot of folks on the poorer side who will no longer have access to health benefits”: “The bill cuts over 1 trillion from health programs- the largest rollback of federal support in American history. These cuts will result in an estimated 10 million people losing their health insurance coverage.” The source for this claim is the Congressional Budget Office: https://www.cbo.gov/publication/61569 -

Sure. Here’s a summary: https://medicareadvocacy.org/impact-of-the-big-bill-on-medicare/ Now, some people here will no doubt point out that this was written by an advocacy group opposed to the Bill and opposed to Trump. And that’s fair. But the summary makes several points based on what appear to be the facts. So if you disagree with it, then you need to explain where and how the writers get things wrong.
