The case for free trade and open immigration

Perhaps when a real man (besides myself) actually enters this thread we can ask that question. -
Border Patrol agents stage show of force at Newsom’s ‘big beautiful press conference’
The Real timschochet replied to Maximum Overkill's topic in The Geek Club
Nonetheless, the voters of California ARE going to decide this and the voters of Texas are not. For those of you who care about this sort of democracy that’s an important distinction. (Personally I prefer the legislature deciding without public voting- but that’s in a perfect system which we don’t have.) -

This is the same delusion you have that caused you to try and impeach him. You’re creating false scenarios in your head. -

Your psychoanalysis of me is both fascinating and ignorant. Perhaps we should examine what would cause a random dude on the idiot to constantly brag about his millions and hot wife. -

We don’t already have this and we DO treat white immigrants different from brown. Always have. What you call opinion pieces and commentary are filled with facts and statistics. HTH -

Oh I don’t suffer. In fact your posts are part of the reason. They’re so moronic by and large that my laughter of them always cheers me up and gets me in a better mood. So thank you for that. -

Well a whole lot is. We’ve been trying to tell you that for years. Our current immigration system certainly is. -

Apparently you guys live in an alternate universe. It’s not the real one. -

Yes but it’s not offered evenly and it’s completely racist as currently structured: https://www.brookings.edu/articles/us-immigration-policy-a-classic-unappreciated-example-of-structural-racism/ -

Wait- are you suggesting that if voters reject Newsom’s proposal he will ignore them and do it anyhow? -
The case for free trade and open immigration
The Real timschochet replied to The Real timschochet's topic in The Geek Club
1. Free trade refers to unilateral free trade as well. The idea being that a half a loaf is better than no loaf. Historically, tariffs designed to force free trade have not worked; they only lead to higher tariffs. 2. Open immigration is not open borders. It means, in general terms, controlled immigration open to all, with restrictions only for criminals and the unhealthy. Much as we’ve had for most of this countries’ history with amazing positive results. It has nothing whatsoever to with border control. -
Elon says that Trump is in the Epstein files.

For now Trump has managed to successfully change the subject. But I don’t think this story is going away… -

I get this argument in a vacuum but it doesn’t fly here IMO. Texas is doing this. They shouldn’t be but they are. Are we (Democrats) supposed to twiddle our thumbs and do nothing but scold Republicans while Trump amasses more power and continues with authoritarianism? I think California has no choice but to do this. -

In terms of “constituents best interests”- would you agree that the fact that California is putting this question up to a vote by the public, whereas Texas isn’t, gives California somewhat of a moral high ground compared to Texas? -

Sorry my bad- the link only goes to a review of the article, not the article itself which has since been made into a book. Here is the book on Amazon; it is free to download on Kindle: https://www.amazon.com/Case-Free-Trade-Open-Immigration/dp/0964044749 -

Not ignoring anything. In this case we will know who is right in a very short time. -
The ICE Raids are killing local economies; they need to stop
The Real timschochet replied to The Real timschochet's topic in The Geek Club
Again you have to factor in their effect on the overall economy, particularly on consumer pricing, in order to make a true evaluation. And no you did not rip the study I posted to shreds. I will however acknowledge that there are certainly competing opinions on this question. BUT - here is a new study about how much mass deportation is going to cost California: https://news.ucmerced.edu/news/2025/study-mass-deportations-would-cost-california-economy-275-billion-decimate-critical As you can see, even if I were to agree with you that this is a problem (I don’t) the proposed “solution” is still far worse and leads to an even more negative outcome. A much better solution would be to give these folks a path to citizenship. -
Trump goes to Russia to meet Putin

Well it helps in this regard when Trump threatens consequences unless there is a ceasefire, gives a deadline (twice) and then nothing happens. -
Border Patrol agents stage show of force at Newsom’s ‘big beautiful press conference’
The Real timschochet replied to Maximum Overkill's topic in The Geek Club
Not at all. The poll is absolutely legit and it means that Newsom’s work is cut out for him. But the poll was conducted between July 28-August 12. It may be that what’s going on in Texas hasn’t fully registered in the voters minds. By the time we get to November that won’t be the case, I believe. We will see. If the voters of California, fully aware that Republicans gained 5 seats in Texas but still don’t want to do this, so be it. But I have a feeling they will. -
Border Patrol agents stage show of force at Newsom’s ‘big beautiful press conference’
The Real timschochet replied to Maximum Overkill's topic in The Geek Club
Well we’ll know the truth about that very shortly. If you’re correct then the initiative will lose at the ballot box and Newsom will have failed. So let’s see what happens. -
Another month of controlled inflation
The Real timschochet replied to supermike80's topic in The Geek Club
The 0.9 increase is disturbing. And obviously I believe it’s only the beginning, it’s not too late for Trump to walk most of this back… -

The Real timschochet replied to The Real timschochet's topic in The Geek Club
Newsom is only a concern for conservatives who want authoritarian rule. They should be concerned by Newsom; he stands up to them. -

The Real timschochet replied to Maximum Overkill's topic in The Geek Club
You’re not paying attention. If the map is redrawn in November Democrats will win 5 more seats in California. It neutralizes Texas.
